FISHING REPORT – 05-01-2012

BASS
Cressbrook Dam is still fishing quite well, with good numbers of Bass around the 30-40cm mark, being taken on Soft Plastics, Jackalls and Blades.
Bass fishing has fired up at Boondooma over this past week, with plenty of fish being taken throughout the dam, hard bodies, like SMAK 12’s, 19’s and Golden Child have proven to be the best lures for trolling, while casting Spinnerbaits and Jackalls at steeper banks has also produced some quality fish. Bjelke Peterson has again produced a few Bass around the points on live bait and trolled Mask Vibe Jackalls, there are a lot of undersize fish being caught, so remember, the minimum length for Bass is 30cm.
At Somerset the Bass are schooled up around Pelican Point, Queen Street and around Kirkleigh, try targeting these fish with Blades, Jackalls, and trolled hard bodies, and you should pick up a few nice fish.

Yellowbelly and Cod
Still good numbers of Yellowbelly in Boondooma, trolling hard bodies and Jackalls has given the best results. You could also try casting Jackalls and Spinnerbaits, working along the steeper banks, and for the bait anglers, using live Shrimp in the Stewart arm of the dam should see you land a few as well. The Ballone River at St.George has settled a bit over the past week, this has resulted in some good catches of Yellowbelly and Cod throughout the river, with live Shrimp and Crays proving to be the best bait.
The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has fished a bit tough over the past week, however, if you can find a patch of fish, you will certainly land some quality Yellowbelly, with frozen Saltwater Yabbies, live Worms and Shrimp proving to be the best bait. The Dumeresq River, downstream of Texas has seen good catches of Yellowbelly and a few Cod, mainly taken on live bait. Fishing has been a bit patchy this week at Coolmunda, with some anglers bagging out, while others have struggled, but there has been some good quality Yellowbelly and a few nice Cod around the 65 – 70cm mark caught on trolled hard body lures and frozen saltwater yabbies. Leslie Dam has produced some quality Yellowbelly, Silver Perch and the odd just legal Cod on frozen saltwater yabbies, as well as trolled hard body lures. Glenlyon has again fished well over the past week, with some nice Cod around the 90 – 100cm mark, as well as plenty of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch, caught mainly on Spinnerbaits, trolled hard body lures and live Shrimp.

GOLD COAST AND THE TWEED

The seas have settled a bit offshore over the past week, so there has been heaps of Spotty Mackerell out off Palm and Mermaid beaches, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo at 9 Mile Reef, Wahoo, Dolphin Fish and Marlin on the 36’s, and good numbers of Snapper around Cook Island and the 24’s. Inshore has seen good numbers of Jack’s around Sovereign Island and Paradise Point, Tailor, Yellowtail Kingfish and Trevelly in the Seaway, on the run-in tide, nice Flathead throughout the Tweed, Garfish around Wavebreak and Crab Islands, Whiting near the Council Chambers in the Nerang River and also throughout Pimpama River and Coombabah Creek and there has been plenty of Muddies in the mid to upper reaches of the Tweed, as well as good numbers of Sand Crabs at the southern end of the Broadwater.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing again has been hard going due to strong winds, but there has been a few Spotty and Spanish Mackerel about. Inshore, the Noosa River is producing plenty of Mangrove Jack and Flathead at night with a few quality Trevelly thrown in as well, also some quality Whiting throughout the Noosa River and near the Power Boat Club at Caloundra, also at Caloundra, there has been a few Jewies coming out of the deeper holes in the passage, Flathead and Bream off the Boardwalk, Mangrove Jack in Bells Creek, the Maroochy River is still a bit dirty, but it has produced some reasonable numbers of School Jew in the Cod Hole and there has been some good catches of Muddies in the creeks.
