YARAMOLONG WEIR CARP BUSTER COMPETITION
Last Sunday morning saw around 120 people head out to Yaramolong Weir near Pampas, to do their bit in the fight against Carp in our waterways. Over the 6 hours of the competition, there was 152 Carp caught, with the biggest weighing in at 3.5kg. This fish was caught by Krista Gollan of Millmerran and Matt Mogg of Toowoomba caught the most Carp, with a total of 23. There was also quite a few Yellowbelly landed, and overall everyone had an enjoyable morning, with many people asking when the next one was going to be held. A special mention for Brett and Sarah Wilson, and I’m sure many others who helped organize and run the day, and also the sponsors who got behind the day and helped out with the prizes.
BASS
Cressbrook Dam has picked up this past week, with some good numbers of Bass around the 30-40cm mark, being taken on Spinnerbaits, Jackalls and Blades.
Boondooma Dam has continued to fish well, with good numbers of Bass landed throughout the dam. Casting Jackalls and Spinnerbaits to the edges and trolling hard body lures in darker colours, early morning and late afternoon, and brighter colours through the middle of the day has proven to be the most successful. Bjelke Peterson has produced a few, just legal Bass on live bait, and Baramba Creek above and below the dam is still producing quality fish in good numbers.
At Somerset, there are still some nice Bass around, in the deeper water, try targeting these fish with Jackalls, Blades and Soft Plastics and you should land a few.
Yellowbelly and Cod
Still good numbers of Yellowbelly in Boondooma, basically in the same areas, and using the same methods that the Bass have been caught on. The fishing has quietened a bit at Coolmunda, but it has still produced some good numbers of Yellowbelly this week, the best methods have been, trolling hard body lures and using live shrimp.
Leslie Dam is still fishing quite well, with good numbers of quality Yellowbelly and Silver Perch taken on bait and trolled hard body lures.
Glenlyon has again fished quite well over the past week, with some nice Cod up to the 70cm mark, as well as some good numbers of Yellowbelly, caught mainly on Spinnerbaits, trolled hard body lures and live Shrimp.
GOLD COAST AND THE TWEED
The offshore fishing has picked up a bit over the past week, there has been plenty of Kingfish caught on Jigs around 9 Mile and the closer reefs, Spangled Emperor off Cook Island and Dolphin Fish and Wahoo out wider on the shelf. Inshore has seen plenty of Whiting at the Anchorage in the Tweed and near the Council Chambers in the Nerang River, Flathead throughout the Tweed River and the Jumpinpin area, Mangrove Jack around Hope Island and near the bridges and rock walls in the Tweed, Gar on the flats just near Seaworld, School Jew around the bridges in the Tweed and also off the headlands at Kingscliff and Cabarita and there’s been plenty of Sand and Mud Crabs throughout the creeks and rivers.
SUNSHINE COAST
Offshore fishing has been a bit quiet over the past week, but there has been good numbers of Sweetlip and Snapper, as well as a few Mackerel around 12 Mile Reef. Inshore has seen good numbers of Flathead in the Boardwalk area at Caloundra, Tailor at the bar entrance of the passage and the mouth of the Noosa River, Jack’s also around the mouth of the Noosa River and in Bells Creek, Trevally in the passage, the Noosa River and Bells Creek, Whiting around the Power Boat Club and in numbers off the beaches, and Muddies in the estuaries.
