FISHING REPORT – 05-04-2012
EASTER WEEKEND SHAPING UP TO BE BUSY
With good weather forecast for the Easter weekend, our
dams and waterways are going to be fairly busy. If you are going boating over
the break, make sure your PFD’s (Personal Flotation Device) are in good
condition and up to the latest Australian Standards, you must have a PFD for
all persons in the boat and all children under the age of 12 must wear a PFD at
all times, while the boat is underway. A boat is classed as being underway,
most of the time, apart from when it is anchored or nosed onto a bank. Boat
ramp rage is another issue that arises at these busy times of year. There are a
few things we can do to avoid these situations, make sure you have your boat
ready for launching before moving onto the ramp, offer to help, if someone is
launching on their own, or even having difficulty backing the trailer. There
will be a lot of boats, kayaks, canoes and people on the water, so make sure
you stay alert, if everyone does these few simple things, we should all have a
safe and happy Easter. With the weather looking pretty good and a full moon on
Saturday night, the fishing should be good, so good luck to everyone heading
out for a fish this Easter and make sure you send your photos to mullet_gut@bigpond.com or drop them into
the shop, and you never know, your photo could end up in the paper.
BASS
Cressbrook Dam
reopened last Friday, and has produced a few Bass on soft plastics and bait in
the usual spots, out from the boat ramp, across to the buoy line around the
tower and also around Deer Island. Much the same as last week for Boondooma Dam, working
soft plastics through schooled fish in deeper water, also casting Jackalls to
the edges and hopping Mask Vibes around the points. Again very similar to last
week at Bjelke Peterson, quite a few Bass have been caught around the 28 – 33
cm mark. They are being caught on a selection of live worms, live shrimp and
some were caught on ¼ oz Blades. Somerset Dam has produced some quality Bass
over the past week, with most of the bigger fish coming on Blades, on the
northern side of Pelican Point, and there was also a few taken on plastics.
YELLOWBELLY AND
COD.
Cooby Dam has
produced some nice Yellowbelly and quite a few Jewies, frozen Saltwater
Yabbies, live Shrimp and Worms have landed the most fish.
The Yellowbelly
continue to bite well at Boondooma, the majority of fish are being caught
trolling hard body lures pretty tight to the banks, in around 15-20 feet of
water, and for the bait anglers, the Stuart arm of the dam has again produced
fish up to 3kg. The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi, from the boat ramp to Boggabilla
Weir continues to fish well with plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod caught on frozen
Saltwater Yabbies and trolled Spinnerbaits and hard bodies. Glenlyon continues
to fish well, it is very much the same story as last week, with plenty of Cod,
as well as heaps of Yellowbelly, being caught on both bait and lures. A lot of
the Cod are still taking Spinnerbaits. Plenty of Yellowbelly and a few Cod up
to 87cm throughout Leslie Dam, with bait and lures proving to be successful.
Coolmunda has picked up this week, with quite a few Yellowbelly and the odd Cod
being caught on trolled hard bodies on the flats and on bibless crankbaits and
bait around the timbered area.
GOLD COAST AND TWEED
Offshore
fishing has been rewarding on the inshore reefs this week, with some nice
catches of Wahoo and Mackerel and the odd Cobia coming off the outer reefs,
trolling red head and pilchard coloured hard bodies has produced the most fish. Inshore
fishing has produced Trevelly and and Yellow Tail Kingfish, casting metal slugs
off the walls of the Seaway, Whiting around the sand banks throughout the
Broadwater and near the anchorage in the Tweed River, quality Flathead
throughout the Tweed and at Kalinga Bank, a few Tailor off the beaches, and some
nice Muddies in the Coomera River and Coombabah Creek.
SUNSHINE COAST
Plenty
of Mackerel, with a few Coral Trout, and Sweetlip on the closer inshore reefs,
while the outer reefs have produced some Cobia and Yellowfin Tuna. Inshore
fishing has produced plenty of Grunter in the passage and Flathead off the
Boardwalk at Caloundra. Whiting and Flathead throughout the Noosa River during
the day, and at night, some nice Barra, Mangrove Jack and School Jew, Mangrove
Jack also in Roys Creek, there was a cracking 78cm Jack caught in the Pelican
Waters canals and plenty of Dart have been landed off the beaches.
