FISHING REPORT   – 25-09-2014

BASS

Live shrimp, Tailspinners, Mask Vibes and silent TN60 Jackalls have all been effective at Cressbrook Dam, with the upper reaches of the Cressbrook Creek arm, the main point in the Bull Creek arm and out from the camp ground point being good spots to target. Somerset Dam has continued to produce good numbers of Bass this week, The Spit, Kirkleigh and the Pelican Point area have been the best spots to target, with slow rolled soft plastics, Tailspinners and Ice Jigs proving to be effective and live shrimp have again been productive for the bait anglers. Boondooma has again seen some decent Bass getting about throughout the dam, mask vibes, tailspinners and trolled hard bodies are working well, while the main basin, the junction and Pelican Point have been the best spots to target and Maroon Dam has again seen some quality Bass landed over the past week, targeting the weed edges with soft plastics, crank baits and live shrimp has given the best results.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing decent numbers of Yellowbelly, out from the boat ramp has been a popular spot, while frozen saltwater yabbies and jigged blades have been the most effective. Glenlyon has fished well again this week, with plenty of Cod up to 80cm hitting bigger spinnerbaits and trolled hard bodies, live shrimp and blades are working the best on the Yellowbelly. Plenty of fish taken on worms and frozen saltwater yabbies at Coolmunda this week, with trolled hard bodies starting to pick up a few as well. Leslie Dam has seen Yellowbelly taking TN60 Jackalls, live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies and trolled spinnerbaits have picked up a few Cod around the 70cm mark, both Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson dams continue to produce good numbers of fish through the main basins on jigged blades and trolled hard bodies. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River has produced good numbers of fish on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and bait, Yellowbelly have been active in the Dumeresq River, upstream of Texas and the Condamine River continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, with most of the weirs and popular holes, throughout the system again proving to be quite productive.

GOLD COAST

Offshore fishing this past week has seen Yellowfin Tuna and Snapper on the 18’s and 24’s, while inshore fishing has seen Bream and Jewies in the Seaway, inside the Jumpinpin Bar has produced good size Jewies as well and Kalinga Bank has seen plenty of Tailor and Flathead getting about.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has seen Snapper, Pearl Perch and Yellow Tail Kingfish getting about 9 Mile, 12 Mile and Chardons Reefs and Murphys Reef has produced Sweetlip and Tusk Fish, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Whiting in the lower parts of the Maroochy River, Bream and School Jew at the mouth of Bells Creek, Flathead throughout the passage and in the Noosa River, the upper reaches are producing good numbers of Mangrove Jack, while Trevally and Flathead, have been taking live bait around the river mouth, on the incoming tide.

FRASER ISLAND

Due to the windy conditions over the past week, the fishing has been a bit patchy, with only low numbers reported.

FISHING REPORT   – 18-09-2014

BASS

Somerset Dam has produced good numbers of Bass this week, with some quality fish getting about, The Spit, Kirkleigh and the Pelican Point area have been the best spots to target, slow rolled soft plastics worked tight to the bottom, has been good, while Tailspinners and Ice Jigs have been effective as well and live shrimp are the go, for the bait anglers. A few smaller fish near the Eagles Nest at Cressbrook, it’s also worth a look on the flats, out from the boat ramp and in the Cressbrook Creek arm of the dam. Boondooma has again seen some decent Bass getting about throughout the dam, slow rolled vibes or ice jigging around Pelican Point has seen the best results with 50cm plus fish not uncommon. Bjelke Peterson is still fishing well; Bass Point has been a hot spot, casting Jackalls and smaller spinnerbaits to the edges early morning and then using plastics and blades a bit deeper, later in the day, has been good as well. Moogerah Dam has seen some schooled Bass located in the main basin; these fish are taking a variety of lures, including soft plastics, blades and ice jigs and Maroon Dam has again seen some quality Bass up to 48cm landed over the past week, targeting the weed edges with soft plastics and live shrimp has given the best results.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing decent numbers of Yellowbelly, working the weed edges early morning and late afternoon has been good, trolling hard bodies and using bait in the deeper parts has been effective as well. Glenlyon has fished well this week, with plenty of Cod from 70cm and upwards, as well as heaps of Yellowbelly being caught, Jackall Doozers and spinnerbaits are working well for the Cod, while live shrimp and blades are working the best on the Yellowbelly. Lures have worked well at Coolmunda this week; working them close to the bottom has been successful, while bait has worked well around the timber, a few Cod have started to show up as well, which have provided a bit of fun for the anglers. Numbers at Leslie Dam are on the increase, with lure anglers having better success than previous weeks, there have been quite a few reports of bag limits being filled in an afternoon; hopping Mask Vibes provided the best results, while trolling hard bodies along Cod Alley produced some nice fish. Bait anglers also had some success up near the Black Boys on shrimp. Connolly Dam also managed to produce some nice fish; bait anglers had the most success, with good numbers of Yellowbelly landed on worms in the more sheltered areas, both Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson dams have produced good numbers of fish, mainly around the timbered parts, with live shrimp and frozen salt water yabbies proving to be popular in these dams. As for the rivers, the Balonne at St.George is fishing well for Yellowbelly on live bait, with a few fish starting to take spinnerbaits and the Condamine River continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, with most of the weirs and popular holes, throughout the system again proving to be quite productive.

GOLD COAST

Offshore fishing this past week has again seen Cobia taking live bait on the closer artificial reefs and out wider; the northern 36’s has been firing for some big Kingies and Amberjack. Plenty of Jewies off the Seaway wall, on live bait, good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and trolled lures throughout the Broadwater and Jumpinpin, quality Bream around the bridges and pontoons throughout the Nerang River and good numbers of Tailor around Crusoe Island.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has again seen the outer reefs fishing well for Snapper, Pearl Perch, Yellow Tail Kingfish and Amberjack, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Whiting around the Power Boat Club, big Bream and Flathead on soft plastics, off Military Jetty and around the mouth of the Maroochy River, Trevelly and Mangrove Jack at night, under the bridges, in the Pelican Waters canals and in the Noosa River, Trevally are hitting surface poppers on the flats, while  Queenfish, Jewies and Flathead, have been taking live bait around the river mouth.

FRASER ISLAND

Much the same as last week at Fraser, with good numbers of Tailor, Whiting and Dart getting about the exposed beaches, the numbers of good quality Tailor are on the increase.

FISHING REPORT   – 11-09-2014

CHANGE TO OPENING HOURS FOR TOOWOOMBA DAMS

I forgot to mention this last week, so for those of you who don’t already know, our local Toowoomba dams have a change to their opening hours from 1^st September to 30^th April. The hours are, 7am to 8pm at Cooby and 6am to 8pm at Cressbrook, water based activities are not permitted on the dams outside of these times. BASS

Bass fishing has continued to improve this week, with Cressbrook Dam again producing some fish out from the boat ramp, there’s still some decent schools showing up from there through to the Eagles Nest, live shrimp, soft plastics, vibes and tailspinners have worked the best. The fish are starting to show up in a few more areas at Somerset as well, with Pelican Point through to Kirkleigh being the best area of the dam to target, soft plastics, tailspinners and soft vibes have been the pick of the lures. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point and The Junction, trolled hard bodies have also picked up a few through the narrows, trolling deep diving lures in the old creek beds has been effective at Bjelke Peterson and Maroon Dam has seen some quality Bass up to 48cm landed over the past week, targeting the weed edges with soft plastics, fly and live shrimp has given the best results.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has produced decent numbers of Yellowbelly, the fish seem to be hanging just out from the weed edges and trolling shallow diving hard bodies or casting spinnerbaits in tight to the weed has been effective, while using bait in the deeper parts has produced a few fish as well. Glenlyon is a bit quiet at the moment, but there have been a few Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp, frozen saltwater yabbies and hard bodies in about 12-15ft of water, Cod have proven to be little bit harder to catch, although this should improve over the coming weeks, providing the weather stays kind to us. Bait has again been a good option at Coolmunda , with some nice Yellowbelly and a couple of Cod taken through the old creek bed, but as the water temperature rises, lures will start to become more effective. Leslie Dam saw a slight increase in activity over the past week, with a few Yellowbelly and Silver perch landed on trolled hard body lures, in approximately 10 foot of water, in front of the Washpool, there have also been some nice Yellowbelly caught, working the banks with Jackals, while opposite the dam wall in about 30 foot of water, has been a pretty good spot for the bait anglers. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi has produced good sized Yellowbelly on bait and hard bodies, the Balonne at St.George is fishing well for Yellowbelly on brighter coloured lures, the Dumeresq has picked up a bit, with Yellowbelly biting well on bait, and the Condamine River continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, with most of the weirs and popular holes, throughout the system proving to be quite productive.

GOLD COAST

Offshore fishing has been a bit quiet, but the36’s and 50’s have produced some quality Pearl Perch, Kingies and Amberjack, while the close artificial reefs have been good for Snapper. Inshore fishing has seen Jew, Tailor and Trevally in the Seaway on the run in tide, good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and trolled lures throughout the Broadwater and also at the Pin, quality Whiting at the Council Chambers in the Nerang River, Tailor off the beaches and a few Sand Crabs have started to show up in the southern end of the Broadwater.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has again been pretty quiet, with only low numbers of Snapper and Parrot Fish taken on 8 and 12 Mile reefs and Caloundra wide has produced Snapper and Kingfish. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of big Whiting around the Power Boat Club, quality Flathead on soft plastics at the bar entrance, small Trevally in the Pelican Waters canals, some decent Bass in the upper reaches of the Mooloolah River and in the Noosa River, Tailor are hitting surface poppers in Woods Bay, big Flathead and Whiting throughout, some nice Jewies to 80cm in the deeper holes and the upper reaches have seen some nice Mangrove Jack getting about.

FRASER ISLAND

Good numbers of Tailor, Whiting and Dart getting about the exposed beaches, with some really good quality Tailor starting to show up.

BASS

A bit of an improvement on the Bass scene this week, Cressbrook Dam has produced some fish out from the boat ramp, there’s also some schools showing up from there through to the Eagles Nest, live shrimp, soft plastics, vibes and tailspinners have worked the best. A few more fish at Somerset as well, with Queen Street and Kirkleigh being the best places to target, soft plastics, tailspinners and soft vibes have been the pick of the lures. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point and The Junction, trolled hard bodies have also picked up a few through the narrows, trolling deep diving lures in the old creek beds has been effective at Bjelke Peterson and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on mask vibes and tailspinners, looking in 30 – 35ft of water, just out from the timber has been a good option.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies and blades in about 30ft of water, trolling smaller lures tight to the weed edges has picked up a few as well. Glenlyon has seen a few Cod up to 90cm, taken on spinnerbaits around towards the dam wall. At Leslie Dam, anglers managed to land some nice Yellowbelly on both lures and bait, the Black Boys produced good numbers of fish on bait, while the lure anglers also managed to land a few up past the Black Boys while casting Jackalls at the structure. Coolmunda has seen blades and TN60 Jackalls working well and a few just legal Cod have been taken on prawns and worms. Boondooma Dam has again produced good sized Yellowbelly on trolled hard bodies through the narrows and Bjelke Peterson has also produced good quality Yellowbelly again, working TN60 Jackalls around Bass Point has worked well, while spinnerbaits and hard bodies have picked up a few around the timber.  As for the rivers, the Goondiwindi area has been steady, with only low numbers of Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies, the Balonne River at St.George has seen some decent size Yellowbelly hitting green and yellow hard bodies and the Condamine River around the Warwick area fished reasonably well for Yellowbelly on crank baits and surface lures produced a couple of Cod.

GOLD COAST

Offshore fishing has seen a few Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and 24’s and out wider, Kingfish and Snapper have been caught on the 50’s, while inshore has seen the sand pumping jetty fishing well for Trevally and Tailor on the incoming tide, some nice school Jew around the pipeline and the weed banks are producing some good size Squid.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has again been pretty quiet, with only low numbers of Snapper and Parrot Fish taken on 8 and 12 Mile reefs, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead throughout the Passage and the Maroochy River, Bream and Whiting at Military Jetty, Trevally are hitting surface lures around structure in most of the canals and the Noosa River has produced a few Jacks on live bait, under the bridges at night and the river mouth has been firing for Flathead and Trevally, on the incoming tide.

FRASER ISLAND

With better conditions, Tailor are starting to show up in good numbers, with the northern part of the island producing slightly better quality fish.

FISHING REPORT   – 29-08-2014

FISHING CLOSURES FOR FRESHWATER FISH SPECIES

As of midnight this Saturday 31st August through to midnight 30th November, a no take rule applies for Murray Cod, in the Dumeresq, Macintyre and Barwon Rivers. These waterways can still be fished for Golden Perch, but if you happen to catch a Cod, it must be returned to the water as quickly as possible. On the other hand, the closed season for Australian Bass finishes at midnight, this Saturday 31st August, so it’s all systems go, for those of you that like fishing the Brisbane River.

BASS

Things are still a bit quiet on the Bass scene, however there have been low numbers of fish landed again at Somerset, with Queen Street and Pelican Point being the best places to target, soft plastics, tailspinners and soft vibes have been the pick of the lures. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point, The Junction and also into the Stuart River arm and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on mask vibes and blades, looking in 30 – 35ft of water, in the main basin would be your best option.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Glenlyon has produced small numbers of Yellowbelly this week, frozen saltwater yabbies have picked up the most fish, but there has been some better quality fish taken on trolled hard bodies. Leslie Dam was a bit weather affected again this week, trolling hard bodies up towards the back of the dam in the more sheltered areas was a good option, while working blades through some schooled fish, in the main basin produced a few as well. Boondooma Dam has again produced good sized Yellowbelly on trolled hard bodies in the Stuart arm, just out from the timber, darker colours are still working the best and Bjelke Peterson has also produced good quality Yellowbelly again, working TN60 Jackalls around Bass Point has worked well, while spinnerbaits and hard bodies have picked up a few around the timber.  As for the rivers, the Goondiwindi area has seen a few smaller Cod hitting spinnerbaits and frozen saltwater yabbies have worked well for Yellowbelly and the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick has been fishing reasonably well for Yellowbelly on crank baits and surface lures have worked well again for Cod.

GOLD COAST

It’s been a bit lumpy out off the coast again this week, but there has been a few Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and out wider, Pearl Perch, Kingfish and Snapper have been out in reasonable numbers on the 50’s, while inshore has seen the Seaway fishing well for Trevally and Bream along the rock walls, quality Flathead at the Aldershots, Golden Bank and Crusoe Island and fairly good numbers of Tailor at the Jumpinpin Bar on the run in tide.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has again been pretty quiet, due to the rough conditions, with only low numbers of Snapper taken on the inner reefs, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead throughout the Passage, Bream and Luderick off the boardwalk at Caloundra, Trevally around the bridge pylons and Flathead on the sand banks in the Maroochy River and the Noosa River has produced heaps of  Trevally, Whiting around the frying pan and the river mouth has been firing for Flathead and Jewies.

FRASER ISLAND

Pretty ordinary here again due to the windy conditions, with only the odd Tailor taken and what’s been caught hasn’t had any real size to it.

 

 

FISHING REPORT   – 22-08-2014

BASS

Things have been a bit quiet, due to the weather this past week, however there have been low numbers of fish landed at Somerset, with Queen Street and Pelican Point being the best places to target, while ice jigs, tailspinners and soft vibes have been the pick of the lures. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point, The Junction and also into the Stuart River arm and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on ice jigs and tailspinners, looking in 25 – 30ft of water, on the western side of the dam would be your best option.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Glenlyon has produced small numbers of Yellowbelly this week, trolled hard bodies, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies are still a good option, a few Cod have been caught on spinnerbaits, even though it’s a bit quiet, persistence will pay off. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies and hard bodies, targeting the old creek beds are the best option. Leslie Dam saw a few nice fish landed this past week, there were a couple of legal sized Cod landed on trolled hard body lures, they measured 64cm and 70cm, we didn’t see too many anglers brave the weather conditions over the weekend, the people that did venture out, only managed a few fish, mainly on bait. Boondooma Dam has seen good sized Yellowbelly taking trolled hard bodies in the Stuart arm, just out from the timber, darker colours have worked the best and Bjelke Peterson has also produced good quality Yellowbelly again, working brighter coloured TN60 Jackalls, in 20-25ft of water around Bass Point has worked well, while spinnerbaits and hard bodies have picked up a few around the timber.  As for the rivers, the Goondiwindi area has seen Cod hitting bigger spinnerbaits and hard bodies and the Condamine River, out around Yarramalong Weir has been fishing reasonably well for Yellowbelly on lipless crank baits and surface lures have worked well on the Cod.

GOLD COAST

It’s been more of a challenge getting out, than actually catching fish this week, but for those that have there has been a few Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and 24’s, Snapper and Pearl Perch on the northern 36’s and out wider, Kingfish and Amberjack have been hitting jigs on the northern 50’s, while inshore has seen the Seaway fishing well for Bream along the rock walls, quality Flathead on trolled hard bodies throughout the Broadwater, a few Jacks off the rock walls at Runaway Bay and the sand pumping jetty, as well as the beaches have been productive for Tailor.

SUNSHINE COAST

BASS

Still some reasonable shows of fish in Cressbrook at the moment, but there’s still only a few fish being caught, out from the boat ramp, around the Eagles Nest and also out off the points in the main basin have been good spots to look, using soft plastics, soft vibes, ice jigs and blades will work, it’s definitely worth a try with live shrimp in those same areas and casting smaller lures around the weed edges has picked up a few as well. Somerset is still a bit quiet, as far as the Bass fishing is concerned. Boondooma has improved this week, with good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners throughout the main basin, Moogerah is still producing a few Bass on a variety of lures, including soft plastics, soft vibes, tailspinners and blades, however the main schools of fish are starting to thin out, due to the recent pressure put on them.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing the odd Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies, in about 40ft of water. Glenlyon has seen better numbers of Yellowbelly taken on blades this week, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies are still a good option. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch on bait, in the deeper parts of the dam. Leslie Dam saw a slight increase in numbers this week, mainly due to the better weather conditions.  Anglers had success while trolling along the western bank near Cod Alley, as well as to the south of the Black Boys, and for the bait anglers, worms seem to be working the best, with a few nice Silver Perch landed off the bank near the Washpool Reserve. Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson Dam have both seen good sized Yellowbelly taking trolled hard bodies in the main basins and casting blades to the edges has been effective as well, and Somerset has produced good quality Yellowbelly again, casting TN60 Jackalls to the edges has been effective. As for the rivers, the Macintyre continues to fish well, with good numbers of Cod hitting surface lures, shallow diving hard bodies and bigger spinnerbaits, while quality Yellowbelly are biting on frozen saltwater yabbies and smaller trolled hard bodies and the upper reaches of the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick continues to produce a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

Offshore fishing has seen Murphys Reef  and the Barwon Banks producing Snapper, Pearl Perch and Amberjack, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk, Trevally and Bream around the moorings in most of the estuaries, a few Jacks in the upper reaches of the Maroochy River and the Noosa River has produced Golden Trevally at the river mouth, on the incoming tide, quality Flathead taken on trolled minnows and some good size Bream and Whiting have been caught near the Frying Pan.

FRASER ISLAND

Mixed reports from Fraser at the moment, with the wind playing a big part this past week, but even with the windy conditions, there have been times when the gutters have produced reasonable numbers of Tailor.

HERVEY BAY

Offshore fishing has seen Rooneys Reef producing Cobia, Queenfish and Mangrove Jack, Big Woody and Little Woody Islands are holding Trevally and Queenfish, most sand flats are holding Flathead and Urangan Pier has been productive for Bream.
