FISHING REPORT   – 29-08-2014

FISHING CLOSURES FOR FRESHWATER FISH SPECIES

As of midnight this Saturday 31st August through to midnight 30th November, a no take rule applies for Murray Cod, in the Dumeresq, Macintyre and Barwon Rivers. These waterways can still be fished for Golden Perch, but if you happen to catch a Cod, it must be returned to the water as quickly as possible. On the other hand, the closed season for Australian Bass finishes at midnight, this Saturday 31st August, so it’s all systems go, for those of you that like fishing the Brisbane River.

BASS

Things are still a bit quiet on the Bass scene, however there have been low numbers of fish landed again at Somerset, with Queen Street and Pelican Point being the best places to target, soft plastics, tailspinners and soft vibes have been the pick of the lures. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point, The Junction and also into the Stuart River arm and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on mask vibes and blades, looking in 30 – 35ft of water, in the main basin would be your best option.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Glenlyon has produced small numbers of Yellowbelly this week, frozen saltwater yabbies have picked up the most fish, but there has been some better quality fish taken on trolled hard bodies. Leslie Dam was a bit weather affected again this week, trolling hard bodies up towards the back of the dam in the more sheltered areas was a good option, while working blades through some schooled fish, in the main basin produced a few as well. Boondooma Dam has again produced good sized Yellowbelly on trolled hard bodies in the Stuart arm, just out from the timber, darker colours are still working the best and Bjelke Peterson has also produced good quality Yellowbelly again, working TN60 Jackalls around Bass Point has worked well, while spinnerbaits and hard bodies have picked up a few around the timber.  As for the rivers, the Goondiwindi area has seen a few smaller Cod hitting spinnerbaits and frozen saltwater yabbies have worked well for Yellowbelly and the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick has been fishing reasonably well for Yellowbelly on crank baits and surface lures have worked well again for Cod.

GOLD COAST

It’s been a bit lumpy out off the coast again this week, but there has been a few Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and out wider, Pearl Perch, Kingfish and Snapper have been out in reasonable numbers on the 50’s, while inshore has seen the Seaway fishing well for Trevally and Bream along the rock walls, quality Flathead at the Aldershots, Golden Bank and Crusoe Island and fairly good numbers of Tailor at the Jumpinpin Bar on the run in tide.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has again been pretty quiet, due to the rough conditions, with only low numbers of Snapper taken on the inner reefs, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead throughout the Passage, Bream and Luderick off the boardwalk at Caloundra, Trevally around the bridge pylons and Flathead on the sand banks in the Maroochy River and the Noosa River has produced heaps of  Trevally, Whiting around the frying pan and the river mouth has been firing for Flathead and Jewies.

FRASER ISLAND

Pretty ordinary here again due to the windy conditions, with only the odd Tailor taken and what’s been caught hasn’t had any real size to it.

 

 

FISHING REPORT   – 22-08-2014

BASS

Things have been a bit quiet, due to the weather this past week, however there have been low numbers of fish landed at Somerset, with Queen Street and Pelican Point being the best places to target, while ice jigs, tailspinners and soft vibes have been the pick of the lures. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point, The Junction and also into the Stuart River arm and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on ice jigs and tailspinners, looking in 25 – 30ft of water, on the western side of the dam would be your best option.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Glenlyon has produced small numbers of Yellowbelly this week, trolled hard bodies, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies are still a good option, a few Cod have been caught on spinnerbaits, even though it’s a bit quiet, persistence will pay off. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies and hard bodies, targeting the old creek beds are the best option. Leslie Dam saw a few nice fish landed this past week, there were a couple of legal sized Cod landed on trolled hard body lures, they measured 64cm and 70cm, we didn’t see too many anglers brave the weather conditions over the weekend, the people that did venture out, only managed a few fish, mainly on bait. Boondooma Dam has seen good sized Yellowbelly taking trolled hard bodies in the Stuart arm, just out from the timber, darker colours have worked the best and Bjelke Peterson has also produced good quality Yellowbelly again, working brighter coloured TN60 Jackalls, in 20-25ft of water around Bass Point has worked well, while spinnerbaits and hard bodies have picked up a few around the timber.  As for the rivers, the Goondiwindi area has seen Cod hitting bigger spinnerbaits and hard bodies and the Condamine River, out around Yarramalong Weir has been fishing reasonably well for Yellowbelly on lipless crank baits and surface lures have worked well on the Cod.

GOLD COAST

It’s been more of a challenge getting out, than actually catching fish this week, but for those that have there has been a few Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and 24’s, Snapper and Pearl Perch on the northern 36’s and out wider, Kingfish and Amberjack have been hitting jigs on the northern 50’s, while inshore has seen the Seaway fishing well for Bream along the rock walls, quality Flathead on trolled hard bodies throughout the Broadwater, a few Jacks off the rock walls at Runaway Bay and the sand pumping jetty, as well as the beaches have been productive for Tailor.

SUNSHINE COAST
Offshore fishing has been a bit patchy due to the windy conditions, with only low numbers of Snapper taken on the inner reefs, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead throughout the Passage, decent numbers of Whiting around Military Jetty and Bells Creek, Bream near structure in the canals and the Noosa River has produced heaps of Golden and Big Eye Trevally on micro jigs, Whiting around the frying pan and the river mouth has been firing for Flathead and Jewies.

FRASER ISLAND

Pretty ordinary here at the moment, with only the odd Tailor taken and what’s been caught hasn’t had any real size to it.

FISHING REPORT   – 15-08-2014

BASS

Still some reasonable shows of fish in Cressbrook at the moment, but there’s still only a few fish being caught, out from the boat ramp, around the Eagles Nest and also out off the points in the main basin have been good spots to look, using soft plastics, soft vibes, ice jigs and blades will work, it’s definitely worth a try with live shrimp in those same areas and casting smaller lures around the weed edges has picked up a few as well. Somerset is still a bit quiet, as far as the Bass fishing is concerned. Boondooma has improved this week, with good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners throughout the main basin, Moogerah is still producing a few Bass on a variety of lures, including soft plastics, soft vibes, tailspinners and blades, however the main schools of fish are starting to thin out, due to the recent pressure put on them.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing the odd Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies, in about 40ft of water. Glenlyon has seen better numbers of Yellowbelly taken on blades this week, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies are still a good option. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch on bait, in the deeper parts of the dam. Leslie Dam saw a slight increase in numbers this week, mainly due to the better weather conditions.  Anglers had success while trolling along the western bank near Cod Alley, as well as to the south of the Black Boys, and for the bait anglers, worms seem to be working the best, with a few nice Silver Perch landed off the bank near the Washpool Reserve. Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson Dam have both seen good sized Yellowbelly taking trolled hard bodies in the main basins and casting blades to the edges has been effective as well, and Somerset has produced good quality Yellowbelly again, casting TN60 Jackalls to the edges has been effective. As for the rivers, the Macintyre continues to fish well, with good numbers of Cod hitting surface lures, shallow diving hard bodies and bigger spinnerbaits, while quality Yellowbelly are biting on frozen saltwater yabbies and smaller trolled hard bodies and the upper reaches of the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick continues to produce a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

GOLD COAST

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has seen Murphys Reef  and the Barwon Banks producing Snapper, Pearl Perch and Amberjack, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk, Trevally and Bream around the moorings in most of the estuaries, a few Jacks in the upper reaches of the Maroochy River and the Noosa River has produced Golden Trevally at the river mouth, on the incoming tide, quality Flathead taken on trolled minnows and some good size Bream and Whiting have been caught near the Frying Pan.

FRASER ISLAND

Mixed reports from Fraser at the moment, with the wind playing a big part this past week, but even with the windy conditions, there have been times when the gutters have produced reasonable numbers of Tailor.

HERVEY BAY

Offshore fishing has seen Rooneys Reef producing Cobia, Queenfish and Mangrove Jack, Big Woody and Little Woody Islands are holding Trevally and Queenfish, most sand flats are holding Flathead and Urangan Pier has been productive for Bream.

FISHING REPORT   – 08-08-2014

BASS

At Cressbrook, some good shows of fish out from the picnic area, the Eagles Nest and also around the main point in the Bull Creek arm of the dam, targeting them with soft plastics, soft vibes, ice jigs and blades will work, it’s definitely worth a try with live shrimp in those same areas and casting smaller lures around the weed edges has picked up a few as well. Somerset is still a bit quiet, as far as the Bass fishing is concerned. Nothing has changed at Boondooma this week, with the odd bass taken on ice jigs and blades throughout the main basin, Moogerah has been the pick of the dams for Bass, with reasonable numbers of fish taking a variety of lures, including soft plastics, soft vibes, tailspinners and blades and Maroon has again produced low numbers, mainly on live shrimp, around the weed edges.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing a few Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies, in about 40ft of water. A bit quieter at Glenlyon this week, with small numbers of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch taking worms and frozen saltwater yabbies. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch on bait, in the deeper parts of the dam. There were a few Yellowbelly landed at Leslie this past week, anglers seemed to have the most success by vertically jigging blades or hopping Jackall Mask Vibes around the rocky structure in the main basin and even though the numbers are down a bit, the quality is certainly there. Boondooma Dam has again seen plenty of Yellowbelly taking soft vibes and ice jigs in the main basin and casting blades to the edges has been effective as well, good numbers of quality Yellowbelly at Bjelke Peterson, with deep diving hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies working the best and Somerset has produced good quality Yellowbelly, using silent TN60 Jackalls, cast to the edges. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River has seen good numbers of Cod hitting surface lures, shallow diving hard bodies and bigger spinnerbaits, quality Yellowbelly are biting on frozen saltwater yabbies and smaller trolled hard bodies and the upper reaches of the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick continues to produce a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

Offshore fishing has seen the inner reefs producing Snapper and the odd Tusk Fish. Inshore fishing at Caloundra has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk, Flathead throughout the passage and at the mouth of the Maroochy River, Winter Whiting on the sand flats, near the Powerboat Club and the mouth of the Noosa River has produced Golden Trevally and Jewies on the incoming tide.

FRASER ISLAND

Tailor fishing is going alright at the moment, with most gutters holding fish, there’s no great size to them, but the numbers are pretty good.

BASS

Nothing has changed at Boondooma this week, with the odd bass taken on ice jigs and blades throughout the main basin, still a few fish taken on blades and soft plastics at Moogerah Dam and Maroon has produced low numbers, mainly on live shrimp, around the weed edges.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is producing a few Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies, looking in about 40ft of water will give you the best chance. Good numbers of Cod on spinnerbaits again at Glenlyon this week, 70cm has been about the biggest caught and still some decent numbers of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch taking worms and frozen saltwater yabbies. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly on bait and Ecogear ZX Blades, in the deeper parts of the dam. There were a few Yellowbelly landed at Leslie this past week, anglers seemed to have the most success by vertically jigging blades, Jackall Mask Vibes also accounted for a few nice fish in the main basin and the bait anglers also had some success around the boulders across from the dam wall. Boondooma Dam has again seen plenty of Yellowbelly taking soft vibes and ice jigs in the main basin and also the timbered area of the Stuart arm, good numbers of Yellowbelly at Bjelke Peterson, with blades, soft vibes and frozen saltwater yabbies working the best. As for the rivers, it’s fairly similar to previous weeks, the Macintyre River has seen good numbers of Cod hitting surface lures, shallow diving hard bodies and bigger spinnerbaits, quality Yellowbelly are still on the bite as well, the Dumeresq River, downstream of Texas has produced reasonable numbers of smaller Cod this week, spinnerbaits and hard bodies have been effective there as well, and the upper reaches of the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick have produced a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

Offshore fishing has seen the outer reefs fishing well for big Snapper and Pearl Perch, plenty of Squire and Tailor around Brays Rock, the inner reefs are producing smaller Snapper and the odd Tusk Fish and there’s still a few Spotty Mackerel getting about. Inshore fishing has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk and at the mouth of the Maroochy River, Winter Whiting on the sand flats, near the Powerboat Club, some decent size Flathead in Bells Creek, the Mooloolah River and also the Noosa River and the Noosa River has also produced Jacks, Golden Trevally and Jewies on live baits.

FRASER ISLAND

Still good numbers of Tailor and Dart in most of the gutters, particularly on the southern end of the island.

BASS

Cressbrook has been patchy again this week, look for schooled fish throughout the dam and target them with soft plastics, soft vibes, ice jigs and blades, it’s also worth a try around the edges, particularly early morning and late afternoon, soft plastics, blades and crankbaits would be your best options in these areas. A few schools of fish are starting to show up at Somerset Dam, Pelican Point, Eagles Nest and Queen Street are the better spots, with ice jigs, blades and soft vibes picking up a few fish. At Boondooma, the odd bass has been caught on ice jigs and blades throughout the main basin and Moogerah Dam has been a bit quiet, however blades worked tight to the bottom have picked up the odd fish.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Some good numbers of Cod on spinnerbaits at Glenlyon this week, but no big fish to report and still some decent numbers of Yellowbelly taking worms and frozen saltwater yabbies. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly on bait, in the deeper parts of the dam. Fishing at Leslie Dam has improved over the past week, with fairly good numbers of Yellowbelly taken on bait, opposite the dam wall in the main basin, and targeting submerged structure with soft vibes has been effective again. Boondooma Dam has seen plenty of Yellowbelly taking soft vibes and ice jigs in the main basin and also the timbered area of the Stuart arm, plenty of Yellowbelly at Bjelke Peterson as well, with blades, soft vibes and frozen saltwater yabbies working the best. Not a lot has changed as far as the rivers are concerned, the Macintyre River has seen good numbers of Cod hitting shallow diving hard bodies and bigger spinnerbaits, quality Yellowbelly have been plentiful as well, the Dumeresq River, downstream of Texas has produced reasonable numbers of Cod this week, spinnerbaits have been effective there as well, and the upper reaches of the Condamine River have produced a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits and frozen saltwater yabbies.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

After the strong winds subsided, offshore fishing has improved as the week progressed, with Snapper and Trag Jew taken on the 36’s, and out wider, Pearl Perch have been prominent on the 50’s, while inshore, has seen the Seaway fishing well for Jewies and Tailor, early morning on the run in tide has been the best time, quality Flathead at Flipping Sands and Crusoe Island, just to the north of Jumpinpin, and there’s plenty of smaller Bream hanging around the rock walls and pylons, throughout all of the estuaries.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has seen the outer reefs fishing well for big Snapper and Tusk Fish, the inner reefs are producing smaller Snapper and Sweetlip and there’s still a few Spotty Mackerel getting about, but they are getting a bit patchy. Inshore fishing has produced Bream off the Boardwalk and Flathead just inside the bar entrance at Caloundra, Bream, Trevally and School Jew in the upper reaches of the Maroochy River, the Noosa River has produced big Tailor and Trevally on metal lures, on the incoming tide and quality Flathead are taking soft plastics on the sand flats.

FRASER ISLAND

Tailor are thick in the gutters and there are plenty of Dart getting about as well.

BASS

A bit hit and miss at Cressbrook at the moment, look for schooled fish throughout the dam and target them with soft plastics, soft vibes, ice jigs and blades, it’s also worth a try around the edges, particularly early morning and late afternoon, soft plastics, blades and crankbaits would be your best options in these areas. A few schools of fish are starting to show up at Somerset Dam, Pelican Point, Eagles Nest, Queen Street and the start of the timber at Kirkleigh are the better spots, with vertically worked blades picking up a few fish. At Boondooma, the odd bass has been caught casting blades to edges and jigging blades off the bottom in top end of the Stuart River and there’s still a few active fish at Maroon, they have mainly been around the edges and weed pockets, with soft plastics and small suspending minnows proving to be the most effective.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

A few Cod on spinnerbaits at Glenlyon this week, and still some decent numbers of Yellowbelly taking live shrimp. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly on bait, and in the deeper parts of the dam, Soft Vibes and blades have produced a few fish as well. Much the same in the Warwick area this week, at Leslie Dam, a few Yellowbelly have been taken on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies, also targeting submerged structure with soft vibes has been effective and Boondooma Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch taken on live shrimp, Jackals and Spinnerbaits in the timbered areas of both arms of the dam. Not a lot has changed as far as the rivers are concerned, the Macintyre River has again seen good numbers of Cod hitting surface lures and bigger spinnerbaits, quality Yellowbelly have been plentiful as well, the Dumeresq River, downstream of Texas has produced reasonable numbers of Cod this week, surface lures and spinnerbaits have been effective there as well, and the upper reaches of the Condamine River have produced a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has seen the northern grounds producing some quality Sweetlip, Caloundra 12 mile has produced some good Snapper and the Barwon Banks and Caloundra Wide have been the places to go for a few Pearl Perch and Cobia. Inshore fishing has seen Gar starting to show up in the Mooloolah River, the entrance to Lake Weyba has been producing a few Jacks and Flathead, the Woods Bay area has been good for a few Trevally and Tailor, the Passage and Pelican Waters have produced Bream and Flathead and on the beaches, Tailor have started to show up in reasonable size and numbers, Bream have also been worth chasing with some good quality fish being caught.

FRASER ISLAND

Good numbers of Tailor, Whiting and Dart getting about, the average size of the Tailor is starting to pick up, with a lot of the fish pushing the 55cm mark.
