FISHING REPORT   – 31-05-2013

BASS

Cressbrook is a bit hit and miss at the moment, try around the points and drop-offs throughout the dam, soft plastics, soft vibes and blades will give you the best chance of landing a fish, there has been reports of a few fish taking TN60 Jackals, cast to the edges at the Cressbrook Creek arm of the dam, while live shrimp would be your best bet as far as bait goes. Not a lot has changed at Somerset, the fish are still quite scattered, Pelican Point, Queen Street and the start of the timber at Kirkleigh are the best spots to target, with slow rolled soft plastics and blades picking up a few fish. Quite a few people have been pre- fishing Boondooma Dam before the ABT BassPro in a few weeks’ time, the end results have been, a lot of casts, for very little reward, so bait would be the best option if you’re heading that way, and Bjelke Peterson has again seen a few smaller Bass taking live Shrimp around Bass point and as far as the Redclaw go, Boondooma, Bjelke Peterson, Somerset and Cressbrook are still producing low numbers at the moment.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing some decent catches of quality Yellowbelly, ice jigs, blades, live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies have again been the popular options. Cod fishing is a little slow at Glenlyon at the moment, with only a couple of 70cm fish taken this week, but it has again produced some nice Yellowbelly on live shrimp, below the dam, the river is producing a lot of smaller Cod on hard bodies and spinnerbaits. Coolmunda Dam has again fished well for Yellowbelly, using bait in the deeper parts of the dam has produced the most fish, there has been a few smaller Cod landed as well, again bait has been the best option, with live shrimp, frozen saltwater yabbies working the best. In the Warwick area the fishing is still a little slow at Leslie Dam, with a few Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies around the rock wall, the town reaches of the Condamine is still the better option with a few decent fish landed over the past week and Bjelke Peterson has again produced some Yellowbelly in the back parts of the dam, with live shrimp being the best option and the Stuart River arm at Boondooma has seen a few fish taken on live shrimp. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi has again been a bit quiet, the Balonne River at St.George continues to produce good numbers of Yellowbelly, bait has been the best option for these fish, while some decent Cod have been taken on spinnerbaits, plenty of smaller Cod taking bait and Spinnerbaits at Bonshaw Weir and the Yarramalong Weir near Pampas has fished well for Yellowbelly and Cod, with spinnerbaits and Jackals producing the most fish.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore fishing has been quiet this week, due to the poor conditions, however those who have ventured out, have been rewarded with some big Pearl Perch on the 50’s, while Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel and Yellowfin Tuna have been prominent, closer in, on the 24’s. Inshore fishing has seen Tailor off the beaches at the Tweed and Gold Coast, and also a few around the entrance to the Tweed River, the Southport Seaway has produced Mulloway on live bait at night, Tailor and Trevelly on the run in tide, good quality Bream in the deeper holes, Flathead on plastics throughout the Broadwater and a few Muddies are getting about the mouths of most of the creeks.

SUNSHINE COAST

Very similar with the offshore fishing here, not much to report due to the poor conditions. Inshore, the Maroochy River has produced Bream and Trevelly around most of the bridges, the Boardwalk at Caloundra has produced some Bream,with the windy conditions, Curramundi Lake has been popular for Flathead, Bream Whiting and Dart, the Pelican Waters canals have produced some decent Bream on soft plastics, the Noosa River has been firing for Trevelly, Mulloway and Flathead, with a few Tailor and Mangrove Jack thrown in and with the recent rain, a few Muddies have started to show up around the creeks.

 

 

FISHING REPORT   – 24-05-2013

BASS

Cressbrook is only producing low numbers of smaller Bass at the moment, try around the points and drop-offs throughout the dam, soft plastics, soft vibes and blades will give you the best chance of landing a fish, while live shrimp would be your best bet as far as bait goes. Not a lot has changed at Somerset, the fish are still quite scattered, Pelican Point, Queen Street and the start of the timber at Kirkleigh have been the best spots to target, with slow rolled soft plastics and blades picking up a few fish. The Brisbane River, downstream of Wivenhoe Dam has produced some quality Bass to 50cm, with Spinnerbaits and Jackals working well on those fish, Boondooma Dam is still pretty quiet at the moment, with a few Bass scattered throughout the dam, Bjelke Peterson has again seen a few smaller Bass taking live Shrimp around Bass point and as far as the Redclaw go, Boondooma, Bjelke Peterson, Somerset and Cressbrook are producing low numbers at the moment.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has been a bit quieter this week, mainly due to the weather and not as many people fishing, however there has still been a few Yellowbelly taken on ice jigs, blades and frozen saltwater yabbies throughout the dam and shore based fishing has produced a few fish as well. The fishing is still a little slow at Glenlyon, but it has again produced a few Yellowbelly around the 35-40cm mark, with frozen saltwater yabbies, live shrimp and worms landing the most fish, while bigger spinnerbaits and Jackals have produced some nice Cod around the 60 to 70cm mark. Coolmunda Dam has been fishing well for Yellowbelly this week, using bait in the deeper parts of the dam has produced the most fish, there has been a few smaller Cod landed as well, again bait has been the best option, with live shrimp, frozen saltwater yabbies and cray tails working the best. Inshore fishing has seen Tailor and Mulloway off the beaches at the Tweed Coast, and also a few around the entrance to the Tweed River, the Southport Seaway has produced Mulloway on live bait at night, Tailor and Trevelly on the run in tide, good quality Bream in the deeper holes, Flathead on plastics around the Aldershots and Kalinga Bank and plenty of Gar hanging around the weed beds near Seaworld and Crab Island.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has been pretty good again; with most reefs fishing well for Spotty Mackerel, Coral Trout, Sweetlip and Snapper, and Chardons Reef has been firing for 20kg plus Spanish Mackerel, with trolled baits and metal lures landing the most fish. Inshore, the Maroochy River has produced Bream and Trevelly around most of the bridges, the passage at Caloundra is fishing well for Whiting and Mulloway, a few Flathead taking plastics on the sand banks opposite the Power Boat Club, good numbers of Trevelly in the Noosa River, a few Tailor starting to show up off the beaches and the Pelican Waters canals have produced some decent Queenies on surface lures.

 

 

FISHING REPORT   – 17-05-2013

BASS

Boondooma Dam is still pretty quiet at the moment, using bait will give anglers a better chance of landing a fish, reaction lures around the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms would be worth a try as well, Bjelke Peterson has improved a little this week, with a few smaller Bass taking live Shrimp around Bass point and as far as the Redclaw go, Boondooma, Bjelke Peterson, Somerset and Cressbrook are still producing reasonable numbers at the moment, but as the weather continues to cool, the numbers will decline.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Not a lot has changed at Cooby Dam this week, it continues to produce good numbers of Yellowbelly, although they are starting to decline a bit, targeting these fish with blades, ice jigs and soft vibes has been the best option for lure fishing, while frozen Saltwater Yabbies have again been the pick of the bait. The fishing is still a little slow at Glenlyon, but it has again produced a few Yellowbelly around the 35-40cm mark, with frozen saltwater yabbies, live shrimp and worms landing the most fish, while bigger spinnerbaits and Jackals have produced some nice Cod around the 60 to 70cm mark. Coolmunda Dam has been fishing well for Yellowbelly this week, using bait in the deeper parts of the dam, has produced the most fish, there has been a few smaller Cod landed as well about, again bait has been the best option. Fishing is still a little slow at Leslie Dam, with a few Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies in the deeper water, but there were a few fish caught, hopping mask vibes in the shallows and Bjelke Peterson has finally started to produce some Yellowbelly off the points in the dam, with bait being the best option. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi has again produced some quality Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies and also trolled hard bodies, the Cod fishing is still going well, with a lot of fish hitting dark coloured spinnerbaits worked around structure. The Balonne River at St.George continues to produce good numbers of Yellowbelly, bait has been the best option for these fish, while some decent Cod have been taken on spinnerbaits, the fish are very tentative in the Dumeresq River at the moment, so you will have to use a bit of stealth when fishing this area, if you do, there are some quality Yellowbelly and Cod getting about, with live bait and spinnerbaits getting the best results and the weirs along the Condamine River have again produced a few Yellowbelly and Cod on live bait, frozen saltwater yabbies and spinnerbaits.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore fishing was a bit quieter this past week, due to the conditions not being great, however there has been some quality Snapper taken on 9 Mile Reef while a few keen anglers have ventured out to the 50’s and landed some nice Kingies, Snapper and Wahoo. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of School Jew along the wall at the entrance of the Tweed River, good quality Bream and Flathead throughout the Tweed and Jumpinpin area, a few Chopper Tailor at Kalinga Bank, and plenty of Gar hanging around the weed beds, throughout the Broadwater.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has been pretty good again, with the wider reefs fishing well for Kingies, Mackerel, Wahoo, Snapper and Long Tail Tuna, trolling lures and drifting live baits has been effective and there has been some good action just out from Kings Beach, with some good catches of Snapper and Mulloway. Inshore, Maroochy and Noosa Rivers have produced Bream and Flathead throughout, good Whiting on the sand banks opposite the Power Boat Club, School Jew at the mouth of the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers and the Pelican Waters canals have produced a few Trevelly and Bream.

HERVEY BAY

The closer reefs have been fishing well for Snapper and School Mackerel, while inshore, the beaches have produced a few Whiting and smaller Bream and the Urangan Pier has fished well for Flathead.

BASS

Cressbrook is producing a few Bass around the edges, early morning and late afternoon and through the main part of the day, try around the points and drop-offs throughout the dam, soft plastics and blades have been the popular lures to use, while live shrimp have been the pick of the baits. The fish are still quite scattered at Somerset at the moment, Pelican Point has been about the best spot to target, with slow rolled soft plastics and blades picking up a few fish, but it’s also worth a try around the edges casting TN60 Jackals, with reports that some decent fish have been caught using this method. At Maroon, the weed beds have again produced a few Bass, with blades and smaller spinnerbaits getting the best results. No change at Bjelke Peterson and Boondooma Dams this week, they are still fairly dirty, using bait will give anglers a better chance of landing a fish, reaction lures around the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms would be worth a try as well, and as far as the Redclaw go, all of these Bass dams are producing good numbers at the moment.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam continues to produce good numbers of Yellowbelly, there are several schools scattered throughout the dam and targeting these fish with blades, ice jigs and soft vibes has been the best option for lure fishing, while frozen Saltwater Yabbies have again been the pick of the bait. The fishing has finally started to slow at Glenlyon, but it has still produced a few Yellowbelly around the 35-40cm mark, Eel Tail Catfish and Spangled Perch have been prominent as well, with frozen saltwater yabbies, live shrimp and worms landing the most fish, while bigger spinnerbaits and deep trolled lures have again been effective on Cod. Frozen prawns and saltwater yabbies have been the bait of choice for picking up a few Yellowbelly at Coolmunda this week, while trolled hard bodies are still picking up the odd fish as well, below the dam in the Macintyre Brook, has been fishing well for Cod, walking the banks, casting spinnerbaits. Leslie Dam is still not breaking any records, with a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch landed, live Shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies have been the best baits, fishing from the bank at the Washpool camp area has been a favoured spot. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi continues to improve, with some quality Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies and also trolled hard bodies, the Cod fishing is still going well, with a lot of fish hitting trolled lures, as well as spinnerbaits worked around structure, some bigger fish, over the 35lb mark have been landed. The Balonne River at St.George has seen heaps of Yellowbelly taken on saltwater yabbies, while some decent Cod have been taken on spinnerbaits, the Dumeresq River at Texas has picked up a bit, with a few Yellowbelly taking bait and lures and the weirs along the Condamine River have again produced a few Yellowbelly and Cod on live bait, frozen saltwater yabbies and spinnerbaits.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore, Squire have been taken on the closer reefs, the 36’s and Fidos Reef have produced Snapper and Mahi Mahi, the 24’s and Mermaid Reef have seen the odd Mackerel getting about, while the 50’s have produced some quality Kingies and larger Snapper. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of School Jew around the headlands on the Tweed Coast and Boyds Bay has produced a few Trevelly and Flathead, while on the Gold Coast, Tuna, Mulloway and smaller Mackerel have been taking metal lures in the Seaway, plenty of Gar on the sand flats near Seaworld, Sand Crabs throughout the Broadwater and Mudcrabs are still prominent in the mid to upper reaches of the Coomera and Pimpama Rivers.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has been good again, with the wider reefs fishing well for Cobia, Mackerel, Snapper and Tuna, trolling lures and drifting live baits has been effective and the Barwon Banks has seen some quality Red Emperor taken, using big baits, right on the bottom has produced the most fish. Inshore, most of the estuaries have produced decent numbers of Whiting, Bream and Flathead again, the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers have fished well throughout and the Boardwalk at Caloundra has been quite good as well, while Mulloway and Trevelly have been out in numbers at the mouth of the Noosa and Maroochy Rivers and the Pelican Waters canals have produced a few Trevelly and Mangrove Jack.

HERVEY BAY

The outer reefs have been fishing well for Snapper and Reds, with the odd Coral Trout thrown in, while the inshore reefs have also fished well for smaller Snapper, School Mackerel and Tuna.

COOBY AND CRESSBROOK OPENING HOURS

From Wednesday this week, Cooby and Cressbrook Dam’s opening hours changed to their winter times of 7am - 6pm, these opening hours will be in place until 1^st September.

BASS

Cressbrook is producing a few Bass around the edges, early morning and late afternoon and through the main part of the day, try around the points and dropoffs throughout the dam, soft plastics and blades have been the popular lures to use, while live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies have been the pick of the baits. At Maroon, the weed beds have again produced a few Bass, with blades and smaller spinnerbaits getting the best results. No change at Bjelke Peterson and Boondooma Dams this week, they are still fairly dirty, using bait will give anglers a better chance of landing a fish, reaction lures around the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms would be worth a try as well, and as far as the Redclaw go, all of these Bass dams are producing good numbers at the moment.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam continues to produce good numbers of Yellowbelly, with bait still picking up the majority of the fish, although there are still a few hitting blades, soft vibes and trolled hard bodies, live worms, shrimp and frozen Saltwater Yabbies have been the pick of the baits. Not a lot has changed at Glenlyon over the past month, it has again produced a lot of Yellowbelly around the 35-40cm mark, there’s also been some bigger Silver Perch in amongst them, live shrimp have landed the most fish. The one thing that has changed is the Cod fishing, with some good quality fish hitting spinnerbaits over the past week, the biggest Cod tipped the scales at 48lb. Frozen prawns and saltwater yabbies have been effective on the Yellowbelly at Coolmunda this week, while trolled hard bodies have picked up a few as well. Leslie Dam is still not breaking any records, with a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch landed, live Shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies have been the best baits. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi continues to improve, with some quality Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies and also trolled hard bodies, the Cod fishing has really picked up this week, with a lot of fish hitting trolled lures, as well as spinnerbaits worked around structure. The Balonne River at St.George has seen heaps of Yellowbelly taken on saltwater yabbies, while some decent Cod have been taken on spinnerbaits. The Macintyre Brook below Coolmunda has seen plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod taking spinnerbaits and Jackals, and the weirs along the Condamine River have again produced a few Yellowbelly on live bait, frozen saltwater yabbies and spinnerbaits.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore, Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, and small Black Marlin on the 24’s and 36’s, Wahoo and Mackerel at Fidos Reef, and the 50’s straight out from Southport has produced some good quality Pearl Perch. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Tailor and School Jew around the headlands at Cabarita, also plenty of Tailor, Whiting and Dart in the gutters right along the beaches from Kingscliff to Southport, Trevelly, Bream and Mack Tuna in the Seaway and the entrance to the Tweed River, and the Broadwater has seen good numbers of Sand Crabs throughout.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has been good again, with plenty of small Snapper, Coral Trout and Grassy Sweetlip on the closer reefs, Long tail Tuna getting about 12 Mile Reef and trolling lures has produced good numbers of Spotty Mackerel. Inshore, most of the estuaries have produced decent numbers of Whiting, Bream and Flathead again, with the best spots being the mouth of the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers, the Powerboat Club and Wickham Point, plenty of Dart along the beaches, while the Maroochy River and the passage at Caloundra have seen good numbers of School Jew on the run out tide.

HERVEY BAY

The outer reefs have been fishing well for Mackerel, Wahoo, small Black Marlin and Long tail Tuna, while inshore, the creeks have been fishing for Grunter, Bream and a few Threadfin Salmon and plenty of Squid have been caught off the Urangan Pier at night.   

 

FISHING REPORT   – 25-04-2013

This week I would like to start with a big congratulation to local angler Jason Shepherdson on his maiden ABT Bass Pro win last weekend down at Lake St. Clair, near Singleton, in NSW. Well done Shep! On another note, we have a full moon tomorrow, so the fishing should be pretty good for the weekend.

BASS

Cressbrook is producing a few Bass around the edges, and also the points in the dam, soft plastics and blades have been the popular lures to use. Somerset has improved a little bit this week with a few more fish being landed, fishing areas like The Spit, Pelican Point, Queen Street and Eagles Nest will give you the best chance of landing something, while blades and mask vibes have been the pick of the lures. The Redclaw are still out and about in large quantities. At Maroon, the weed beds have again produced a few Bass, with blades and smaller spinnerbaits getting the best results. No change at Bjelke Peterson and Boondooma Dams this week, they are still fairly dirty, using bait will give anglers a better chance of landing a fish, reaction lures around the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms would be worth a try as well, and as far as the Redclaw go, they are still out in big numbers in both of these dams, vegetable peels, rockmelon, dog and cat food have been the most popular baits.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi continues to improve, with some quality Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies, there has also been a lot of Cod up to 90cm taken on trolled lures and casting spinnerbaits around structure. The Balonne River at St. George has seen heaps of Yellowbelly taken from the banks on bait, the Dumeresq River at Texas has gone a little quiet, a few Yellowbelly have been taken on bait and a couple of Cod around the 60-70cm mark on lures, and the weirs along the Condamine River haveagain produced a few Yellowbelly on live bait, frozen saltwater yabbies and spinnerbaits

Offshore fishing has again seen 9 Mile Reef produce reasonable numbers of Wahoo and Mackerel, while the 50’s has seen a few Dolphin Fish getting about. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Tailor and School Jew around the headlands at Cabarita, the Seaway has produced Trevelly and Tailor off the north wall, Flathead throughout the Tweed and the Broadwater, heaps of Whiting and Dart off the beaches, and the mid to upper reaches of the creeks and rivers have produced some good quality Mud Crabs.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has gone well with the better weather this week, plenty of Snapper and Sweetlip around Old Woman Island and 8 and 12 Mile Reefs with heaps of School Mackerel getting about as well. Inshore, most of the estuaries have produced decent numbers of Whiting, Bream and Flathead again, with the best spots being the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers, the Powerboat Club for Bream and Whiting, Tailor off the Beaches, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals and Mud Crabs in the mid to upper reaches of the creeks and rivers.

 

 

FISHING REPORT   – 19-04-2013

Even with a few storms about Cressbrook Dam has stayed at about 90mm over the spillway and remained open to boating, there has been a few smaller Bass coming around the edges on bait, while working the points with blades and soft vibes has produced a few fish as well.

BASS

At Somerset there are some decent schools of fish showing up around the dam, but they are fairly shy at the moment, the normal haunts like The Spit, Pelican Point, Queen Street and Eagles Nest are where there holding, but only a few fish are coming out of these areas, the start of the timber at Kirkleigh has seen a few fish taking Spinnerbaits and blades. The Redclaw are still out and about in large quantities. The surface bite has gone quiet this week at Maroon, but the weed beds have produced a few Bass, with blades and smaller spinnerbaits getting the best results. No change at Bjelke Peterson and Boondooma Dams this week, they are still fairly dirty, using bait will give anglers a better chance of landing a fish, reaction lures around the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms would be worth a try as well, and as far as the Redclaw go, they are still out in big numbers in both of these dams, with rockmelon and boiled potatoes proving to be the most popular baits.

Only a couple of small Cod were caught and released and for the shore based anglers, Silver Perch and Eel-tail Catfish have provided some fun for the anglers as well. Coolmunda has again produced some quality Yellowbelly, with frozen saltwater yabbies and prawns picking up the majority of the fish, there are a few fish getting about the timber and also hanging on the drop-offs, trolling hard bodies in these areas will also get you a couple of fish. Leslie Dam has again been a bit quiet, with a few Yellowbelly landed, using Jackals and live Shrimp in the deeper water towards the wall. Connelly dam hasn’t been much better, with reports of a few Golden Perch and the odd Cod getting about, mainly early morning and late afternoon, with bait proving to be the best option. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi has started to pick up, with the town reaches producing some decent numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod on spinnerbaits and frozen saltwater yabbies, the Dumeresq River at Texas has seen some nice Cod hitting lures in the town reaches and downstream of the town has seen Yellowbelly biting on live worms, and the weirs along the Condamine River have produced a few Yellowbelly on live bait and frozen saltwater yabbies.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore fishing was a bit quieter this week, due to pretty ordinary weather last weekend, however, 9 Mile Reef has produced reasonable numbers of Wahoo and Mackerel, while the 36’s just to the north of the Seaway has seen a few Snapper landed earlier in the day. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Tailor and School Jew around the headlands at Cabarita, the Seaway has produced Trevelly on metal lures and Bream on soft plastics, Flathead around Kalinga Bank, heaps of Whiting and Dart off the beaches, plenty of Gar around Crab Island and Seaworld, and the deeper channels of Coomera and Pimpama Rivers have produced good numbers of Mud Crabs.

 

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore fishing has been a bit quieter here this week, with a few Mackerel getting about 12 Mile Reef, some Snapper starting to show up between 5 and 9 Mile Reefs and good numbers of Yellowfin Tuna are providing some fun for the anglers out off Noosa. Inshore, most of the estuaries have produced decent numbers of Whiting, Bream and Flathead, but the best spots have been the passage at Caloundra for Whiting, Tailor and heaps of Prawns, the Powerboat Club for Bream and Whiting, Tailor off the Beaches, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals and the Noosa River, and the Noosa River has again produced big Whiting up to 40cm on surface lures at the turn of the tide.
