FISHING REPORT   – 29-11-2012

 

 

The closed season for Murray Cod in the Barwon, Macintyre and Dumaresq Rivers finishes at midnight 30^th November, these fish have been a no take species in those waterways, since 1^st September.

 

BASS

 

Cressbrook Dam is still a bit quiet as far as lure fishing goes, but has again produced some decent numbers of fish on live shrimp. Boondooma has had a decent inflow, which has seen the dam rise back up to 99%, still reports of good fish being caught, slow rolling Ayu and Purple & White coloured spinner baits

around points in the Stuart and Boyne arms, also casting Spinner baits into the shallows in the Stuart arm, has been effective. Bjelke Petersen dam produced large numbers of smaller Bass anywhere from 28 to 35cm, with the odd bigger one in the mid 40’s, casting small blades and spinnerbaits around the points and timbered edges throughout the dam has worked best and at Somerset Dam, most areas from Pelican Point through to the timber at Kirkleigh are holding fish, you have to work a bit for them, but there are good numbers taking blades and plastics.

 

YELLOWBELLY AND COD.

 

Cooby Dam has produced few fish again this week, bait has been the most successful, at Boondooma, live shrimp are working well around the timber, in the Boyne and Stuart arms. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly caught, in the same areas as with the Bass. Good quality Yellowbelly have again been prominent at Glenlyon this week, using bait has been most effective, there are still a few decent size Cod up to 113cm about, there were also quite a few undersize Cod about, so make sure anything under 60cm goes back in the water. Coolmunda has produced good numbers of smaller Yellowbelly, dark coloured lures have worked well, live crays and frozen saltwater yabbies have both been successful for the bait anglers. At Leslie Dam, Yellowbelly have been out in good numbers, they have been best targeted with frozen saltwater yabbies and live shrimp, trolling deep diving lures has worked as well, with a few smaller Cod taking them also. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George and Surat continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling hard body lures has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has fished well this past week with good reports of Yellowbelly taking spinnerbaits and bait, there has been a few Cod about as well and even though the Dumeresq River at Texas has dirtied up a bit, it has fished reasonably well for Yellowbelly using spinnerbaits and bait.

 

 

 

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

 

Offshore fishing over the past week, has seen good numbers of Black Marlin about, some nice Spanish Mackerel and Cobia on the 36’s and some big Yellowtail Kingfish are getting about in the deeper channels, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead and Whiting throughout the river, Jacks are still active in the deeper holes and a few Muddies are starting to appear, while up around Southport, Flathead have again been prominent around Crab Island and Jumpinpin , plenty of Jack’s hanging around the bridges throughout the estuaries and good numbers of Whiting around Coomera and Sovereign Island.

 

SUNSHINE COAST

 

Offshore fishing has produced some Mackerel and Cobia on trolled lures, there’s also still a few Marlin about. Inshore fishing has seen good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics throughout most of the estuaries, Whiting are taking surface poppers in the Passage at Caloundra and also in the Noosa River, Jack’s have been taken around Bells Creek, and the Noosa River has produced some thumper Flathead, with soft plastics landing the most fish.

 

 

 

 

FISHING REPORT   – 22-11-2012

 

 

BASS

 

Cressbrook Dam fished quite well last weekend, with some decent numbers coming on live shrimp, however it has been a bit quiet as far as lure fishing goes, with nothing much to report for the past week. Bass have been out in force this week at Boondooma, with good numbers of quality fish taking spinnerbaits, Jackalls and hard bodies around the timber in both arms and also off the edges through most parts of the dam, bait has also worked quite well in the Stuart arm. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen a few smaller Bass around the 35cm mark taken, casting small blades and spinnerbaits around the points throughout the dam has worked best. Much the same again this week at Somerset Dam, it’s still fishing well in most areas, including the timber at Kirkleigh, deeper schooled fish and also shallow banks around the points, soft plastics, Jackalls, blades and spinnerbaits have worked well again.

 

 

YELLOWBELLY AND COD.

 

Cooby Dam has produced few fish again this week, bait off the banks and trolled lures have both been successful, at Boondooma, the fish have been caught in in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, as well as around the edges throughout the dam, with bait, Jackalls and spinnerbaits working well. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on slowly trolled lures around the edges and also on the drop-offs in the deeper parts of the dam, there has also been a lot of eel tail catfish taking bait throughout the dam. Good quality Yellowbelly have been prominent at Glenlyon this week, using bait has been most effective, there are still a few decent size Cod about, they have been caught on hard bodies and spinnerbaits. Coolmunda has again produced good numbers of Yellowbelly, dark coloured lures have worked well, live crays and frozen saltwater yabbies have both been successful for the bait anglers, there have also been quite a few Silver Perch about as well. At Leslie Dam, good numbers of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch this week, bait and hard body lures have produced the most fish. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling hard body lures has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has fished well this past week with good reports of Yellowbelly taking spinnerbaits and bait, eel tail catfish have been out in numbers as well and the Dumeresq River at Texas has fished well for Yellowbelly using spinnerbaits and eel tail catfish and Silver Perch have been caught, using bait.

Very much a carbon copy of last week, as far as inshore fishing goes, there has been good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics throughout most of the estuaries, with some big specimens hanging around the bar entrance at Caloundra, Bream and Whiting are prominent throughout the creeks and rivers as well, Jack’s have been taken around Bells Creek and there has been plenty of Trevelly and School Jew hanging in the deeper parts of the Noosa and Maroochy Rivers.

BASS

 

Cressbrook Dam has continued to produce a few fish over the past week, targeting the edges around the points with blades and soft plastics and also casting soft vibes and plastics to the schooled fish throughout the main basin and the Cressbrook Creek arm of the dam has given the best results. Bass have continued to bite well at Boondooma, with good numbers of quality fish taking spinnerbaits, Jackalls and hard bodies around the timber in both arms and also off the edges through most parts of the dam, bait has also worked quite well in the Stuart and Boyne arms. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of smaller Bass taken, with spinnerbaits working quite well around Pelican and Bass Points. Somerset Dam hasn’t changed a lot this week, it’s still fishing well in most areas, including the timber at Kirkleigh, schooled fish around Pelican Point and Queen Street and also shallow banks around the points, soft plastics, Jackalls, blades and spinnerbaits have all worked well again.

Cooby Dam has produced few fish again this week, bait and trolled lures have both been successful, at Boondooma, the fish have been caught in in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, as well as around the edges throughout the dam, with bait, Jackalls and spinnerbaits working well. At Leslie Dam, good numbers of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch this week, bait and hard body lures have produced the most fish. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling hard body lures has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has been a bit quiet, due to a release of water out of Pindari Dam, there are still a few fish about, but not in big numbers, and are mostly smaller than what has been landed recently, the best options have been using bait, or casting spinnerbaits around the snags and the Dumeresq River has fished quite well for Golden and Silver Perch downstream of Texas, bait has proven to be the best.

Still quite a few Marlin about offshore, also some good Wahoo about as well, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen some quality Flathead to 78cm around Chinderah and behind the Golf Club, Jacks have been taken around Barneys Point, some large Whiting at the Anchorage and you could pick up a few Trevelly  at the river mouth, while up around Southport, some quality Flathead around The Aldershots, plenty of Jack’s in the estuaries, heaps of Whiting around the Council Chambers and some nice School Jew, have again been landed along the North Wall of the Seaway at the turn of the tide, using live bait.

Coolmunda has again produced good numbers of Yellowbelly, dark coloured lures have worked well and frozen saltwater yabbies have again been very successful, the number of Cod caught this week has increased, trolled hard bodies have worked best. At Leslie Dam, trolling hard body lures has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod, in about 15ft of water throughout the dam, and using frozen saltwater yabbies has again been a popular bait around the timber. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling hard body lures has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has fished well this past week with good reports of Yellowbelly taking spinnerbaits and bait, eel tail catfish have been out in numbers as well and the Dumeresq River at Texas has fished well for Yellowbelly using spinnerbaits and eel tail catfish using bait.

The Urangan Peir has been fishing well for Whiting and Flathead, with the occasional small Mackerel taken on lures and live bait. The rivers are fishing well for Threadfin Salmon and some decent Barra have been taken on bait and trolled lures and offshore has produced some quality reef fish.

Cressbrook Dam had been closed over the past few days, due to the fires in the area, but it has reopened for all activities. With no fishing pressure over that time, hopefully it will fish quite well, I would target the points and bays with blades and soft plastics and also look for schooled fish throughout the main basin and the Cressbrook Creek arm, these fish would be best targeted with soft vibes, ice jigs and soft plastics. Boondooma has seen Bass taking spinnerbaits, Jackalls and hard bodies around the edges through most parts of the dam, bait has also worked quite well in the Stuart arm. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of smaller Bass taken, casting small blades to the weed edges around Bass Point. Somerset Dam has been fishing well in most areas, including the timber at Kirkleigh, deeper schooled fish and also shallow banks around the points, soft plastics, Jackalls, blades and spinnerbaits are all working well.

 

 

YELLOWBELLY AND COD.

 

Cooby Dam has seen a few fish landed in the past week, they haven’t been big, but they are legal and very healthy, bait and trolled lures have both been successful, at Boondooma, the fish have been caught in in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms with bait, Jackalls and spinnerbaits working well. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on slowly trolled lures around the edges and also on the drop-offs in the deeper parts of the dam. Plenty of Cod between 10 and 20kg at Glenlyon, spinnerbaits and deep diving hard bodies have been working well and bait has been the most effective for Yellowbelly. Coolmunda has again produced good numbers of Yellowbelly, dark coloured lures have worked well and frozen saltwater yabbies have again been very successful, there are also a few Cod taking trolled hard bodies around the timbered area. At Leslie Dam, trolling Jackalls and hard body lures has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod throughout the dam, and using frozen saltwater yabbies has again been a popular bait. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George has dirtied up a bit, but continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling Codger lures, has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has gone a bit quiet this past week with only a few reports of Yellowbelly and undersize Cod taken on spinnerbaits and bait in the town reaches, and Yarramalong Weir near Pampas has fished well for Yellowbelly and a few smaller Cod, with a variety of baits, spinnerbaits and trolled hard bodies working well.

Strong winds have prevented most anglers from heading offshore over the past week, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead taken off the banks, Jacks have been active around the bridges at night and you could pick up a few School Jew and Trevelly on live bait and plastics at the river mouth, while up around Southport, Flathead have been prominent around Crab Island and Kalinga Bank, plenty of Jack’s in the estuaries and anglers have been chasing Jewies in the deeper holes, inside the Jumpinpin Bar.

Nothing to report as far as offshore fishing, due to the strong winds this week. Inshore fishing this week has seen good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics throughout most of the estuaries, Bream and Whiting off the boardwalk at Caloundra and throughout the Noosa River, the Noosa River and Bells Creek are also firing for Mangrove Jack and the upper reaches of the Maroochy River has produced some quality wild Bass on surface lures and crank baits.

BASS

 

Bass fishing has continued to be quite good around the area over the past week, with Cressbrook still producing reasonable numbers of fish on soft plastics, ice jigs and blades out of some scattered schools, in the main basin, as well as the Cressbrook Creek arm of the dam. Boondooma has seen Bass taking spinnerbaits, soft vibes and plastics in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, while trolling hard bodies has produced a few fish around Pelican Point and the Junction. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of smaller Bass taken, casting small blades to the weed edges around Bass Point. There are still some good schools showing up at Somerset, but it has still been a bit of hard work getting them to bite, Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas have been the pick of the spots again and mask vibes, soft plastics and Blades have picked up the most fish.

Cooby Dam has again produced some good quality Yellowbelly on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies, fishing off the bank, while casting spinnerbaits and Jackalls to the edges has worked as well, there’s also been the odd fish taking trolled hard bodies on the drop offs in the dam, at Boondooma, the fish have been taken off the points, in the Boyne arm, hopping soft vibes and slow rolling spinnerbaits. You could also try blades and deep diving hard bodies, in the deeper parts of the dam. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on slowly trolled lures and live shrimp, throughout the dam. Quite a few Cod caught and released at Glenlyon, with a lot of fish being around the minimum length or just legal, while the timbered parts of the dam have produced some nice fish, mainly on bait, but there has also been some decent fish taken, slow rolling spinnerbaits over the structure. Yellowbelly have been out in force at Coolmunda, with most anglers getting good bags fairly easily, dark coloured lures have worked well and frozen saltwater yabbies have again been very successful. There has also been a lot of undersize Cod about, so remember, the minimum length for Murray Cod is 60cm. At Leslie Dam, trolling hard body lures, has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod, working in 10-15 feet of water has been the key to catching the fish, and using frozen saltwater yabbies around the timber has seen some good fish landed as well. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling Codger lures, has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has picked up over the past week with plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod taken on spinnerbaits and bait in the town reaches, and the Dumeresq River at Texas has been fishing relatively well for Yellowbelly, with bait and lures proving to be popular.

Plenty of Cobia, Snapper, Mack Tuna and also a few small Black Marlin about offshore, but you have to venture out a bit wider to get into the bigger numbers of fish, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead and Whiting around the golf club and throughout the lakes area, Jacks are becoming a lot more active around the rock walls and structure and you could pick up a few School Jew around the bridges, while up around Southport, Flathead have been prominent around Crab Island, The Aldershots and Kalinga Bank, plenty of Jack’s in the estuaries, Whiting around the Council Chambers and some nice School Jew off the north wall of the Seaway.

Offshore fishing has gone well again this week, with good numbers of Cobia, Mackerel and smaller Black Marlin providing anglers with some exciting fishing. Inshore fishing this week has seen good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and Whiting on surface poppers throughout most of the estuaries, Jack’s in Bell’s Creek on livies, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals, Bream off the Boardwalk, and the Noosa River has gone off this week, with Queenies and G.T’s showing up in big numbers.

 

HERVEY BAY

 

Offshore has seen huge numbers of Black Marlin about, with anglers having plenty of hook-ups while targeting Mackerel. The Urangan Pier has been fishing well for Whiting and Flathead, plus a few Golden Trevally showing up around the bait schools. The Burrum River has been producing good Threadfin Salmon on the flats, and the upper reaches has seen some quality Barra taken on trolled lures and live bait.

Bass fishing went a bit quiet last weekend, due to the weather change on Thursday, but it has slowly picked up as the weeks gone on, Cressbrook has produced Bass on soft plastics, ice jigs and blades out of some scattered schools, in the main basin. Boondooma has seen Bass taking spinnerbaits in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, while Ice Jigs and Mask vibes have produced lower numbers of fish around Pelican Point and the Junction. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of Bass taken on trolled hard bodies and live bait. There are still some good schools showing up at Somerset, but it has been a bit of hard work getting them to bite, Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas have been the pick of the spots again and mask vibes, soft plastics and Blades have picked up the most fish.

Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on trolled lures, particularly off Bass Point and around the timber. Quite a few Cod from 70-80cm around Glenlyon at the moment, with purple, red and black hard bodies proving to be the most effective, while the coves and stockyard point have been the better spots to fish, but the Yellowbelly have been quiet with only a few landed on bait. Heaps of Yellowbelly coming out of Coolmunda at the moment, with anglers bagging out fairly easily, they have been caught on live shrimp, live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies and there’s also been a few Cod taken on large hard bodies around the timber. After a fairly quiet weekend, Leslie Dam has picked up through the week, with a few Yellowbelly  starting to take bait, such as, frozen saltwater yabbies and live worms. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still fishing well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has picked up over the past week with plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod spinnerbaits and bait in the town reaches, while trolling hard bodies downstream of Bungunya has worked quite well and the Dumeresq River at Texas has gone a bit quiet with only small numbers of Yellowbelly and a few eel tail catfish about, but there’s plenty of Carp around, the best method has been using live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies.

Offshore fishing has again remained a little quiet over the past week, but there have been some quality Snapper on 9 Mile Reef and some decent Pearl Perch on the 50’s, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead and Jewies throughout, Jacks around the rock walls and a few Whiting in the shallower water on the sand banks, and up around Southport has produced School Jew and Flathead in the Seaway, Whiting around Wavebreak Island and targeting structure throughout the broadwater has been productive for Bream.

Offshore fishing has livened up a bit this week, with good numbers of quality Snapper to 8kg landed on the closer reefs, while out wider has seen a few Marlin starting to show up. Inshore fishing has also picked up this week with good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and Whiting on surface poppers throughout most of the estuaries, Jack’s in Bell’s Creek on livies, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals and the Noosa River has produced a few Threadfin Salmon and some smaller Barra in the upper reaches.

 

HERVEY BAY

 

Very similar to the past few weeks, with good numbers of Whiting and Flathead off the beaches, the Mary and Burrum Rivers are still producing some nice Barra and Threadfin Salmon and Fraser Island continues to produce decent numbers of Tailor.
