FISHING REPORT   – 25-10-2012

 

 

BASS

 

Bass fishing has continued to be quite good around the area over the past week, with Cressbrook still producing reasonable numbers of fish on soft plastics, ice jigs and blades out of some scattered schools, in the main basin, as well as the Cressbrook Creek arm of the dam. Boondooma has seen Bass taking spinnerbaits, soft vibes and plastics in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, while trolling hard bodies has produced a few fish around Pelican Point and the Junction. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of smaller Bass taken, casting small blades to the weed edges around Bass Point. There are still some good schools showing up at Somerset, but it has still been a bit of hard work getting them to bite, Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas have been the pick of the spots again and mask vibes, soft plastics and Blades have picked up the most fish.

 

YELLOWBELLY AND COD.

 

Cooby Dam has again produced some good quality Yellowbelly on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies, fishing off the bank, while casting spinnerbaits and Jackalls to the edges has worked as well, there’s also been the odd fish taking trolled hard bodies on the drop offs in the dam, at Boondooma, the fish have been taken off the points, in the Boyne arm, hopping soft vibes and slow rolling spinnerbaits. You could also try blades and deep diving hard bodies, in the deeper parts of the dam. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on slowly trolled lures and live shrimp, throughout the dam. Quite a few Cod caught and released at Glenlyon, with a lot of fish being around the minimum length or just legal, while the timbered parts of the dam have produced some nice fish, mainly on bait, but there has also been some decent fish taken, slow rolling spinnerbaits over the structure. Yellowbelly have been out in force at Coolmunda, with most anglers getting good bags fairly easily, dark coloured lures have worked well and frozen saltwater yabbies have again been very successful. There has also been a lot of undersize Cod about, so remember, the minimum length for Murray Cod is 60cm. At Leslie Dam, trolling hard body lures, has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod, working in 10-15 feet of water has been the key to catching the fish, and using frozen saltwater yabbies around the timber has seen some good fish landed as well. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George continues to fish well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags, as well as trolling Codger lures, has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has picked up over the past week with plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod taken on spinnerbaits and bait in the town reaches, and the Dumeresq River at Texas has been fishing relatively well for Yellowbelly, with bait and lures proving to be popular.

 

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

 

Plenty of Cobia, Snapper, Mack Tuna and also a few small Black Marlin about offshore, but you have to venture out a bit wider to get into the bigger numbers of fish, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead and Whiting around the golf club and throughout the lakes area, Jacks are becoming a lot more active around the rock walls and structure and you could pick up a few School Jew around the bridges, while up around Southport, Flathead have been prominent around Crab Island, The Aldershots and Kalinga Bank, plenty of Jack’s in the estuaries, Whiting around the Council Chambers and some nice School Jew off the north wall of the Seaway.

 

SUNSHINE COAST

 

Offshore fishing has gone well again this week, with good numbers of Cobia, Mackerel and smaller Black Marlin providing anglers with some exciting fishing. Inshore fishing this week has seen good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and Whiting on surface poppers throughout most of the estuaries, Jack’s in Bell’s Creek on livies, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals, Bream off the Boardwalk, and the Noosa River has gone off this week, with Queenies and G.T’s showing up in big numbers.

 

HERVEY BAY

 

Offshore has seen huge numbers of Black Marlin about, with anglers having plenty of hook-ups while targeting Mackerel. The Urangan Pier has been fishing well for Whiting and Flathead, plus a few Golden Trevally showing up around the bait schools. The Burrum River has been producing good Threadfin Salmon on the flats, and the upper reaches has seen some quality Barra taken on trolled lures and live bait.

BASS

 

Bass fishing went a bit quiet last weekend, due to the weather change on Thursday, but it has slowly picked up as the weeks gone on, Cressbrook has produced Bass on soft plastics, ice jigs and blades out of some scattered schools, in the main basin. Boondooma has seen Bass taking spinnerbaits in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, while Ice Jigs and Mask vibes have produced lower numbers of fish around Pelican Point and the Junction. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of Bass taken on trolled hard bodies and live bait. There are still some good schools showing up at Somerset, but it has been a bit of hard work getting them to bite, Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas have been the pick of the spots again and mask vibes, soft plastics and Blades have picked up the most fish.

Cooby Dam has produced some good quality Yellowbelly on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies, fishing off the bank, while casting spinnerbaits and Jackalls to the edges has worked as well, there’s also been the odd fish taking trolled hard bodies on the drop offs in the dam, at Boondooma, the fish have mainly been caught on bait amongst the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms, while there has still been the odd one caught on trolled hard bodies around the rocky points and edges at the junction, Pelican Point and balancing rock. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on trolled lures, particularly off Bass Point and around the timber. Quite a few Cod from 70-80cm around Glenlyon at the moment, with purple, red and black hard bodies proving to be the most effective, while the coves and stockyard point have been the better spots to fish, but the Yellowbelly have been quiet with only a few landed on bait. Heaps of Yellowbelly coming out of Coolmunda at the moment, with anglers bagging out fairly easily, they have been caught on live shrimp, live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies and there’s also been a few Cod taken on large hard bodies around the timber. After a fairly quiet weekend, Leslie Dam has picked up through the week, with a few Yellowbelly  starting to take bait, such as, frozen saltwater yabbies and live worms. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still fishing well for Yellowbelly and Cod, casting spinnerbaits to the edges and around snags has produced the most fish, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has picked up over the past week with plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod spinnerbaits and bait in the town reaches, while trolling hard bodies downstream of Bungunya has worked quite well and the Dumeresq River at Texas has gone a bit quiet with only small numbers of Yellowbelly and a few eel tail catfish about, but there’s plenty of Carp around, the best method has been using live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies.

Offshore fishing has again remained a little quiet over the past week, but there have been some quality Snapper on 9 Mile Reef and some decent Pearl Perch on the 50’s, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead and Jewies throughout, Jacks around the rock walls and a few Whiting in the shallower water on the sand banks, and up around Southport has produced School Jew and Flathead in the Seaway, Whiting around Wavebreak Island and targeting structure throughout the broadwater has been productive for Bream.

 

SUNSHINE COAST

 

Offshore fishing has livened up a bit this week, with good numbers of quality Snapper to 8kg landed on the closer reefs, while out wider has seen a few Marlin starting to show up. Inshore fishing has also picked up this week with good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and Whiting on surface poppers throughout most of the estuaries, Jack’s in Bell’s Creek on livies, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals and the Noosa River has produced a few Threadfin Salmon and some smaller Barra in the upper reaches.

 

HERVEY BAY

 

Very similar to the past few weeks, with good numbers of Whiting and Flathead off the beaches, the Mary and Burrum Rivers are still producing some nice Barra and Threadfin Salmon and Fraser Island continues to produce decent numbers of Tailor.

Bass fishing is still going alright around the area at the moment, Cressbrook, has produced Bass on soft plastics around Deer Island and Eagles Nest, you could also try casting light weighted spinnerbaits and soft plastics to the edges, or trolling small deep diving lures. Boondooma has seen Bass being taken on trolled deep divers around the junction and Pelican Point and casting soft plastics to the edges has been effective as well. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of Bass taken on trolled hard bodies and live bait. Somerset is still producing good quality Bass, with Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas being the most productive, mask vibes and soft plastics have again picked up the most fish.

Cooby Dam has again seen a few Yellowbelly and some Eel tail Catfish caught on live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies around the edges, there’s also been the odd fish taking trolled hard bodies on the drop offs in the dam, at Boondooma, the fish have mainly been caught on bait amongst the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms, while there has still been the odd one caught on trolled hard bodies around the rocky points and edges at the junction, Pelican Point and balancing rock. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly mainly taken on trolled lures, particularly off Bass Point and around the timber. Bait and lures have both been effective as far as the fishing goes at Glenlyon Dam, with plenty of people bagging out on Yellowbelly and heaps of 15-16lb Cod landed as well. Coolmunda has been fishing very well for Cod and Yellowbelly, trolling hard bodied lures and spinnerbaits has been effective, and for the bait anglers, fishing around the timber has been productive as well, Leslie Dam has been very consistent for Yellowbelly, which have been mainly taken on bait, such as, frozen saltwater yabbies and live worms and a few anglers were rewarded with some nice Cod, casting spinnerbaits around the edges. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still fishing well for Yellowbelly and Eel tail Catfish, with heaps of Carp in amongst them, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has gone a bit quiet this past week with only a few Yellowbelly caught in the area with a nice 75cm Cod reportedly landed over the weekend and the lower reaches of the Dumeresq River at Texas has been the most productive for Yellowbelly with a few eel tail catfish about as well, the best method has been using live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies.

Offshore fishing has again remained a little quiet over the past week, but there have been reasonable numbers of Mac Tuna and Squire on the closer reefs and the outer reefs have produced some quality Pearl Perch, Snapper and Cobia, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen good numbers of Flathead and Jewies throughout, Jacks around the rock walls and a few Whiting in the shallower water on the sand banks, up around Southport, the Flathead Classic went well last week, with most anglers boating some quality fish, Paradise Point has been fishing well for Mangrove Jack, Sand Crabs are on the move, with some decent specimens netted and the Pin has fished well for Tailor and Flathead near the bar entrance and Kalinga Bank.

 

SUNSHINE COAST

 

Very quiet again, as far as offshore fishing goes this week, with only a few Snapper and School Mackerel about. Inshore fishing has gone quiet around Caloundra this week with small numbers of Flathead around the sand banks and the odd Bream off the Boardwalk, however the Maroochy, Mooloolaba and Noosa Rivers have produced good numbers of Flathead, Trevally and Jacks throughout, while the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers have also seen some quality Barramundi landed as well.

 

HERVEY BAY

 

Good numbers of Whiting and Flathead off the beaches and the Mary and Burrum Rivers have produced some nice Barra and Threadfin Salmon.

Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies, particularly off Bass Point and around the timber. Bait and lures have both been effective on Cod and Yellowbelly at Glenlyon Dam, a cracking 110cm Cod was caught and released and there were also a lot around the 60-70cm mark landed as well. Yellowbelly have again been quite active at Coolmunda over the past week, with some decent fish up to 4kg caught on a range of lures, live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies, there has also been the odd Cod about and Leslie Dam has again fished well this week, with some good quality Yellowbelly, as well as a few Cod up to 16kg caught on live shrimp, worms and trolled hard bodies, the timbered area of the dam has been a favoured spot for these fish. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George saw a large number of Carp removed from the river at last weekend’s Carp Buster Comp, there was also some quality Yellowbelly landed as well, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has seen good numbers of quality Yellowbelly taken on live bait and trolled lures and the upper and lower reaches of the Dumeresq River at Texas has produced plenty of good size Yellowbelly and the odd eel tail catfish, the best method has been using live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies.

The fish at Boondooma shut down last weekend, after some pretty good storms Friday afternoon, but it has started to pick up through the week, with a few Bass being taken on slow rolled soft plastics and mask vibes around balancing rock and Pelican Point, while the timbered area of the Stuart arm has produced fish on live shrimp, Spinnerbaits and TN60 Jackalls. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of Bass taken on trolled hard bodies and live bait. Somerset is still producing plenty of big Bass throughout the dam, with Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas being the most productive, ice jigs, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the most fish.

As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still producing good numbers of Yellowbelly and Eel tail Catfish throughout the river, these have been taken mainly on bait, trolled hard bodies and spinnerbaits, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has seen good numbers of quality Yellowbelly taken on live bait and trolled lures, casting spinnerbaits has also worked well, the upper and lower reaches of the Dumeresq River at Texas has produced plenty of good size Yellowbelly and the odd eel tail catfish, the best method has been using live worms

Conditions have been far from perfect for offshore fishing this past week, however there have been reasonable numbers of Mac Tuna and Squire on the closer reefs and the outer reefs have produced some quality Pearl Perch, Snapper and Cobia, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen a few nice Jack’s around the rock walls and structure, a few Flathead on the move throughout and Sand crabs have started to show in the upper reaches, up around Southport, there’s been a few Jewies and small Cobia in the Seaway and there’s been some good catches of Flathead and Sand crabs around Kalinga Banks.

SUNSHINE COAST

Very quiet offshore this week, with no reports coming in. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taken throughout the passage at Caloundra and also in the Maroochy River, Bream and Whiting are active throughout most of the creeks and rivers, and the Noosa River has produced a few Jacks, Trevelly and Tailor throughout.

HERVEY BAY

Good numbers of Whiting and Flathead off the beaches, Barra and Threadfin Salmon on trolled lures in the Burrum River and Fraser Island is producing plenty of average size Tailor.

CLIFTON CARP COMPETITION THIS WEEKEND

Somerset is still firing, with plenty of big Bass landed throughout the dam, anywhere from The Spit through to the timbered area at Kirkleigh, ice jigs, blades, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the most fish.

Offshore Fishing has seen good numbers of Snapper and Cobia coming off the 18’s and 24’s, while inshore, the Tweed River around Chinderah has seen a few nice Jack’s and big Flathead on the move and it’s worth a try at the anchorage for some Whiting, up around Southport, there’s been a few Trevelly and some big Mulloway, up to 12kg in the Seaway and at the Pin, there’s been some good catches of Flathead.

Offshore fishing has gone alright this week, particularly on the wider reefs with Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Tuna and Cobia showing up in good numbers. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taken throughout the passage at Caloundra and the Maroochy River, Bream and Whiting are active throughout most of the creeks and rivers,and the Noosa River has produced a few Jacks, School Jew, Queenfish and Trevelly throughout.

Whiting and Flathead off the beaches, Barra and Threadfin Salmon in the Burrum River and outside has seen some nice Spanish Mackerel landed.

FISHING REPORT – 06-09-2012



BASS

Bass fishing is
still quite good around the area at the moment, Cressbrook was a bit quiet over
the weekend, with the weather system that went through late last week, but it
has picked up during the week, with a few fish landed along the buoy line, as
well as near the toilet block in the Bull Creek arm of the dam. There are still
plenty of schooled fish at Boondooma, with ice jigs, blades and soft plastics working
the best on those fish, casting TN60 Jackalls and Spinnerbaits to the edges and
trolling hard bodies around rocky points and edges in the main basin in about
16ft to25ft water, around the junction and at the start of the timber in both
arms of the dam, has produced some quality fish as well, there has also been
some good size fish landed on bait in the timbered area of both arms, while in
the same area, Bjelke Petersen dam has only seen a few Bass taken on trolled
hard bodies and live bait. Somerset is still firing, with plenty of big Bass
landed throughout the dam, anywhere from The Spit through to the timbered area
at Kirkleigh, ice jigs, blades, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the
most fish, and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on ice jigs, along
the ridge, out from the main boat ramp.

Yellowbelly and Eel tail Catfish throughout the river, these have been taken
mainly on bait, as well as trolled hard bodies, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi
has seen good numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod landed on live bait and lures,
working surface lures around structure, late afternoon, has produced a few Cod,
on the Dumeresq River, while Yarramalong Weir near Pampas has again produced
some quality Yellowbelly on live worms, spinnerbaits and trolled lures.


GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore
Fishing has been good, due to the weather, with big numbers of Snapper,
Kingies, Mackerel, Tuna and Cobia coming off most of the reefs, while inshore,
the Tweed River is producing quality Flathead and big Whiting
throughout, with freshly pumped Saltwater Yabbies and live Sandworms picking up
most of the fish, up around Southport, there’s been some small catches of
Tailor and undersize Mulloway in the Seaway and at the Pin, plastics have
proven popular with the Flathead, while at the bar entrance, there have been
some larger meter plus Mulloway taken on a mixture of soft plastics and live
bait.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore
fishing has gone well this week, with Snapper, Sweetlip, Coral Trout and a few
Cobia landed on most reefs, with the wider ones producing the bigger fish. Inshore
fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taken off the Boardwalk and throughout the
passage at Caloundra, Bream and Whiting are active through most of the creeks
and rivers, a few Jacks are starting to show up in Bells Creek and the Noosa
River has produced a few Tailor and Trevelly throughout.

HERVEY BAY

With the favourable weather conditions, anglers have been
getting in amongst some quality reef fish and pelagics on the wider reefs,
while Fraser Island is still producing some good catches of average size Tailor
during the day, while night time fishing has again seen some bigger fish landed.
