BASSIN SERIES GETS OFF TO A GOOD START AT BOONDOOMA
The first Queensland round of the Bassin Teams
Challenge Series kicked off at Boondooma Dam last weekend. The event had a late
move from Somerset, which saw a few teams drop out, but there was still a total
of 37 teams competed. After several other competitions were held there
recently, it was always going to be a tough bite. There was a total of 127 Bass
weighed in, at an average weight of 886 grams, with the biggest fish tipping
the scales at 1.96kg. Father and Son team, Ken and Ross Murray from Millmerran,
were the eventual winners, with a total limit of 9 fish for 8.88kg, and for
their efforts, the boys picked up a nice $1500 cheque and automatic entry into
the grand final in November this year. For those of you that are wondering,
even after weighing in the second heaviest bag for the weekend, my team came in
11th position. Overall it was a great weekend, with many of the
first time competitors, saying, that they will be back to fish more of these

BASS
At the time of
writing this report, Cressbrook Dam was still closed, due to water running over
the spillway. The technique that worked the best at Boondooma Dam
last weekend was working soft plastics through schooled fish in deeper water,
also casting Jackalls to the edges and hopping Mask Vibes around the points. At
Bjelke Peterson, several Bass were caught ranging between the 28 – 31 cm mark.
They were being caught on a selection of live worms, live shrimp and some were
caught on ¼ oz Blades. Somerset Dam is very unpredictable at the moment, due to
several rises in the water level over the past few weeks.
YELLOWBELLY AND
COD.
The Yellowbelly
continue to bite well at Boondooma, the majority of fish are being caught
trolling hard body lures pretty tight to the banks, in around 15-20 feet of
water, and for the bait anglers, the Stuart arm of the dam has again produced
fish up to 3kg. The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi, from the boat ramp to Boggabilla
Weir continues to fish well with plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod caught on frozen
Saltwater Yabbies and trolled Spinnerbaits and hard bodies. Glenlyon continues
to fish well, it is very much the same story as last week, with plenty of Cod,
as well as heaps of Yellowbelly, being caught on both bait and lures. A lot of
the Cod are still taking Spinnerbaits. Plenty of Yellowbelly and the odd Silver
Perch throughout Leslie Dam, with bait and lures proving to be successful.
Coolmunda is a little quiet, however there is still the odd Yellowbelly being
caught out there.
GOLD COAST AND TWEED
Offshore
fishing has been a bit slow this week, due to poor conditions, but there has been good
numbers of Spanish and Spotty Mackerel out from the Seaway. Inshore fishing has
produced Trevelly and Tailor and Yellow Tail Kingfish, casting metal slugs off
the walls of the Seaway, Whiting around the sand banks throughout the
Broadwater, a few Tailor off the beaches, good size Bass in Robina Lakes and some
nice Muddies in the Coomera River and Coombabah Creek.
SUNSHINE COAST
Plenty
of Mackerel, and a few Coral Trout, Sweetlip and Mouri Cod out from Noosa on
the closer inshore reefs. Inshore fishing has produced Whiting off Golden
Beach, as well as on the sand flats in the Noosa River, big Whiting off Noosa
Beach. The upper reaches of the Noosa River have produced good numbers of small
Mulloway and Grunter, but with this has come a lot of Bull Sharks, which has
provided anglers with a bit of
excitement on the lighter gear and the Boardwalk area at Caloundra has produced
a few Flathead and Bream.

BASSIN SERIES HEADS TO BOONDOOMA THIS WEEKEND
After successfully running Bass tournaments in New South Wales for the last 5 years, Bassin Tournaments organiser, Bruce Anderson has decided to expand into Queensland this year, and this weekend will see the first tournament run at Boondooma Dam, near Proston. Bassin Tournaments provide you with the chance to get a feel for competition fishing, anglers competing against each other, the clock and the bass. Tournament fishing is exciting and a great way to meet new people. They are a very social event, where families can fish together, a couple of mates can have a go, or a fishing club can use it as part of their event calendar, set up their marques, flags etc and just have a great weekend. These events have a social feel about them, but will also cater for the needs of the more seasoned tournament angler, with lots of cash & great prizes on offer. Inshore fishing has produced Trevelly and Tailor in the Seaway, Whiting and Gar around Seaworld, the Nerang River and on the flats at the Pin. Also at the Pin, good numbers of quality Bream and Moses Perch in the creek mouths, Jack’s around the bridges and some nice Muddies at the mouths of most of the creeks.

Offshore fishing has dropped off a bit again this week, but there has been a few Mackerel on the closer reefs, as well as some Marlin out a bit wider. FISHING REPORT – 09-03-2012
BASS
Cressbrook Dam has reopened, and it would certainly be worth heading out to wet a line this weekend. Prior to the dam being closed, it had been fishing well, so I would use my sounder to find the fish, out from the boat ramp and across to the buoy line would be worth a look. If you find the fish, try casting blades, spinnerbaits, Jackals or soft plastics, and hopefully you might pick up a few. Boondooma Dam has again produced some decent catches of Bass, with the biggest reported, being 58cm. Most of the fish have been caught in the Stuart and Boyne arms of the dam, mainly on Jackals and Blades, but you could also try trolling hard bodies in about 15 - 20 feet of water. The Bass continue to become more active in Bjelke Peterson, casting Jackals and Soft Plastics around Bass Point and on the banks below the Wineries has produced the most fish. Somerset Dam has produced some quality Bass over the past week, these fish have mainly been taken in deeper water on Soft Plastics and Blades.

Try targeting these with live Worms, and trolling lures around the rock wall area could also prove fruitful. Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson have again produced reasonable numbers of quality Yellowbelly, the majority of fish are being caught on bait, but casting Jackalls, Blades and Spinnerbaits, or trolling hard body lures should pick you up a few fish as well. After being in flood recently, the Ballone River at St.George has produced heaps of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch. Bait and small spinners have proven to be the best methods when targeting these fish. The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has again fished well for Yellowbelly over the past week, live Shrimp and frozen Saltwater Yabbies have again produced the most fish, but trolling hard bodies and Spinnerbaits should still get you a few. While I’m talking about the Goondi area, I would like to mention that over the past couple of weeks, the Goondiwindi Fish Restocking Group has released 60000 fingerlings in the local reaches of the river, well done to the group for their efforts in raising funds to make that happen. Coolmunda Dam is fishing quite well for Yellowbelly with some quality Cod in amongst them. Frozen Saltwater Yabbies and live Worms seem to be the best bait, but also try casting Jackalls, Spinnerbaits and hard bodies around the timber if you want to chase Cod. Good reports of Yellowbelly throughout Leslie Dam taken on frozen Saltwater Yabbies, while the timber seems to be holding some big fish. If you’re keen, try trolling is this area for Cod as a few anglers were busted off over the past week. The main basin at Glenlyon has been producing some nice Cod trolling deep diving hard bodies in 60ft of water, there’s also been nice Yellowbelly caught on live bait.

Inshore fishing has been a bit quiet as well due to the poor weather conditions, but there has been good numbers of Jewies and Snapper caught around the rock walls in the Seaway, mainly on live bait. The Tweed River has produced some nice Flathead throughout, with some quality Jack’s taken around the bridges and rock walls at night.

FISHING REPORT – 01-03-2012
LAKE BOONDOOMA BASS PRO
Matt Johnson broke through for his maiden BASS Pro event win at the opening round of the 2012 Smak Lures BASS Pro Series at Lake BoondoomaCompiling a 6/6, 7.91kg bag to win the event Johnson relegated Mark Mangold to second and session two leader Brad Clark to third. ABT BASS Pro debutant Joshua Schwerin claimed the non-boater title plus the Smak Lures Big Bass prize courtesy of his day two kicker fish (1.90kg). Overall there were 209 Bass weighed in at an average weight of 990 grams. The majority of the fish were caught on soft plastics, with a few being taken on Blades and Ice Jigs.

Bjelke Peterson is still producing a few Bass, trolling hard bodies around Bass Point and the banks opposite have been the most successful. Earlier this week Somerset was at 117%, and closed to all water based activities, however it was reopened Thursday morning, and there are quite a few fish schooled up in about 30 feet of water. If you were heading that way this weekend, it would be worth a look around the Pelican Point, Queen Street and Bay 13 areas and if you target these fish with soft plastics and blades you should pick up a few.

Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson have both produced pretty good numbers of quality Yellowbelly, the majority of fish are being caught on bait, as well as casting Jackalls, Blades and Spinnerbaits, and trolling hard body lures. The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has again fished extremely well for Yellowbelly this week, targeting the fish with Shrimp and frozen Saltwater Yabbies has produced the most numbers. Fishing has again improved at Coolmunda this week, with quite a few quality Yellowbelly being caught, working Jackalls, Spinnerbaits and hard bodies around the timbered area of the dam. The Yellowbelly have been on the chew at Leslie over the past week, best bait has been live Shrimp and frozen Saltwater Yabbies, while trolled hard bodies and Spinnerbaits have landed a few as well. Glenlyon has again fished well this week, with some nice Cod around the mid 70cm to mid 80cm mark, these have been caught on Spinnerbaits, trolled hard bodies and bait, there are still quite a few undersize Cod being caught and released as well. LAKE BOONDOOMA BASS PRO
The ABT BASS Pro Series kick starts a new tournament season when it hits south Burnett’s Lake Boondooma, this weekend. The opening round of the 2012 BASS Pro season, will see anglers from across NSW and Queensland converge on the at capacity Lake Boondooma, the scene of last year’s BASS Pro Grand Final, for one of the most anticipated events of season. With steady water levels and a predicted hot bite, anglers are champing at the bit to tangle with the bass of one of Australia’s premier bass fisheries. So if you want to catch a glimpse of some of Australia’s top Bass anglers, head up there and catch the weigh in or even one of the session starts. The event kicks off at sunrise on Saturday with two angling session (6-11am, 1-5.30pm), then concludes on the Sunday with a single morning session (6am-11am). Anglers will weigh in their two largest fish each session with the largest combined six-fish bag deciding the champion boater and non-boater for the event.
BASS
At the time of writing this report, Cressbrook Dam’s water level was still about 120mm over the spillway, if we don’t have any reasonable rainfall out that way, the dam may re-open by the weekend, but that is no way a certainty. The fish are quite scattered throughout Boondooma, but there are still good size Bass being landed, with quite a few smaller fish in amongst them, casting Blades, Soft Plastics and Jackalls, as well as trolling hard bodies between 15 and 20 feet have proven to be the most successful methods. There are a few legal Bass starting to come out of Bjelke Peterson, trolling hard bodies around Bass Point and the banks opposite have been the most successful. Somerset has still produced reasonable catches of Bass over the past week, Pelican Point, Queens Street and around the timber at Kirkleigh have been the pick of the spots, while casting Blades, Jackalls and Soft Plastics, or trolling hard bodies have been the best methods.

Cooby Dam is still closed to water based activities, until further notice.
Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson have both produced pretty good numbers of Yellowbelly, the majority of fish are being caught on bait, however, casting Jackalls and Spinnerbaits, and trolling hard bodies is producing quite a few fish as well. The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has again fished extremely well for Yellowbelly this week, targeting the fish with Shrimp and frozen Saltwater Yabbies has produced the most numbers, however trolled lures have also produced good numbers as well. Fishing has improved a little at Coolmunda this week, with quite a few quality Yellowbelly being caught on the trolled lures in the open parts of the dam, while the timbered area of the dam has produced a few, mainly on bait. Leslie Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly taken on live Shrimp and frozen Saltwater Yabbies. Glenlyon has again fished well over the past week, with some nice Cod around the mid 70cm to mid 80cm mark, these have been caught on Spinnerbaits, trolled hard bodies and bait, there are still quite a few undersize Cod being caught and released as well. Yellowbelly and Silver Perch have been plentiful, but they have mainly been coming on bait.
GOLD COAST AND TWEED
Offshore fishing has produced good numbers of Yellowfin and Striped Tuna, just out from the Seaway entrance, Spanish Mackerel at Palm Beach, Mermaid Reef and the Gravel Patch, Wahoo at the 57’s and some Jewies on the closer reefs at night. Inshore has seen good numbers of Trevelly and Jewies caught in the Seaway, on both live bait and lures, some nice Jack’s around the bridges in the Tweed River and rock walls in the Nerang River, quality Whiting near the Council Chambers, Flathead at Seagull Lakes in the Tweed, Sand Crabs around Sovereign Island and some good size Muddies in the mouths of the creeks and rivers.
SUNSHINE COAST
The closer reefs have produced Spanish and Spotty Mackerel, also a few Tuna and Wahoo, it’s a bit of hard work, but there has been a few reef fish coming off 9 Mile Reef and North Reef has seen quality Snapper to 4kg landed. Inshore fishing has again improved, with quality Mangrove Jack still on the chew, the best spots have again been Bells Creek, around the bridges in the Maroochy River and using live mullet and lures around snags, in the Noosa River, plenty of Flathead and Bream around the Boardwalk at Caloundra and throughout the Noosa and Maroochy Rivers, there has also been good catches of Whiting around the Power Boat Club, Snub Nose Dart off the beaches and good numbers of Muddies and Prawns towards the mouth of the Noosa River.
LAKE BOONDOOMA BASS PRO
The ABT BASS Pro Series kick starts a new tournament season when it hits south Burnett’s Lake Boondooma, this weekend. The opening round of the 2012 BASS Pro season, will see anglers from across NSW and Queensland converge on the at capacity Lake Boondooma, the scene of last year’s BASS Pro Grand Final, for one of the most anticipated events of season. With steady water levels and a predicted hot bite, anglers are champing at the bit to tangle with the bass of one of Australia’s premier bass fisheries. So if you want to catch a glimpse of some of Australia’s top Bass anglers, head up there and catch the weigh in or even one of the session starts. BOONDOOMA DAM YELLOWBELLY FISHING COMPETITION
There was a great turnout for the twenty second Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition last weekend, with a total of 641 competitors, including 132 juniors, weighing in 471 fish. The water level in the dam was at 100%, which together with the good weather conditions, set the scene for a great weekend of camping, fishing and family activities. The best session was on Saturday morning with 163 fish weighed in. The champion junior anglers were Maitland Collins of Nanango who weighed-in a 1.805kg Yellowbelly and Blake Manthey of Nanango who weighed in a 1.200kg Australian Bass. Adult angler, Graham Scanlan of Proston took out the category of heaviest Yellowbelly at 2.095kg, while Kathleen Elliott of Proston took out the heaviest Australian Bass at 1.720kg.

Several storms through our dam catchment areas early this week, has seen Cressbrook Dam’s water level rise enough for the council to close the dam, to the public. Prior to this, it was still producing good numbers of fish, out from the boat ramp, near the buoy line and around Deer Island, soft plastics and blades have produced the most fish. Boondooma has settled quite well, after some recent inflows, there are still good size Bass being landed, with quite a few smaller fish in amongst them, Blades, Soft Plastics and Jackalls have proven to be the most successful. Somerset has produced good catches of Bass over the past week, Pelican Point, Queens Street and around the timber at Kirkleigh have been the pick of the spots, while casting Blades, Jackalls and Soft Plastics, or trolling hard bodies have been the best methods.

FISHING REPORT – 09-02-2012
KAYAK PADDLE DAY THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday there is a kayak paddle day being held at Cressbrook Dam from 10am until 2pm, the day is for people, who are interested in getting into kayaking, being able to come and try the different kayaks and canoes and therefore help them choose the right model to suit their needs. It is free, apart from the $2.50 charge to get into the dam, there will be expert kayaker’s there to answer any questions and also help with choosing the right model for you. All safety equipment is supplied, there will be a huge range of kayaks and canoes, so come along and give it a go.
BASS
The weather has been a mixed bag over the past week, however, Cressbrook Dam has still produced good numbers of fish, out from the boat ramp, near the buoy line and around Deer Island, soft plastics and blades have provided the most fish. Boondooma is a little dirty at the moment, which has seen the Bass become a bit scattered. There are still good size fish being landed, but there are a lot of smaller one’s in amongst them, Blades, Soft Plastics and Jackalls have proven to be the most successful.
Somerset is still dirty at the moment, but if you use your sounder to find the fish, try targeting these, with Blades, Jackalls and Soft Plastics.

The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has fished a bit slow this week, due to a 3m rise in water level, there has been the odd Yellowbelly caught, fishing off the bank with bait. Coolmunda has seen some good size Yellowbelly, caught around the timbered area of the dam, and out from the boat ramp on bait, trolled hard body lure, Jackalls and Spinnerbaits. There is a bit of water flowing into Leslie Dam and the Silver Perch are providing some fun for anglers where it flows into the dam, there has also been a few nice Yellowbelly taken in the deeper parts of the dam, on Worms and frozen Saltwater Yabbies. Glenlyon has again fished well over the past week, with some nice Cod around the mid 70cm mark, caught on Spinnerbaits, there have been quite a few undersize Cod caught and released as well. Yellowbelly and Silver Perch have been plentiful, but they have mainly been coming on bait.

Inshore has seen good numbers of Trevelly, Tailor, Jewies and Kingfish on the early run-in tide around the Seaway entrance, some nice Jack’s around Sovereign Island and in the Runaway Bay canals, Whiting in the Nerang River, try around the mouth of the Tweed for Bream and Flathead and it’s worth throwing a few crab pots in most of the creeks for a few Muddies.
