FISHING REPORT   – 08-10-2015

BASS

Cressbrook Dam has again seen some quality fish getting about; the upper reaches of the Cressbrook Creek arm and the points in the main basin have been the hot spots, while spinnerbaits, Tailspinners, soft plastics and live shrimp have worked the best for these fish. Somerset Dam has produced some big Bass this week, there’s plenty of fish around, with The Spit, Bay13 and the Pelican Point areas being the best spots to target, blades, Tailspinners and soft plastics are giving the best results. Boondooma has again seen some decent Bass getting about throughout the dam, soft plastics, tailspinners, ice jigs and trolled hard bodies are working well, while the main basin, the junction and Pelican Point have again been good spots to target, Wivenhoe saw plenty of quality fish taking tailspinners on the flats, just out from Logans Inlet and both Maroon and Moogerah are fishing quite well at the moment, with good number of Bass landed at Maroon, casting soft plastics at the edges and weed pockets has given the best results, while at Moogerah, fishing in the timber towards the southern end of the dam has been the best, with gold blades and tailspinners working well.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly landed this week, out from the boat ramp in 30ft of water, the point opposite the boat ramp and the right hand bank out from the dam wall buoy line have all been popular spots, while frozen saltwater yabbies, ice jigs and jigged blades have been the most effective. Not much has changed at Glenlyon this week, with good numbers of Cod up to 80cm hitting bigger spinnerbaits and trolled hard bodies, while frozen saltwater yabbies, trolled hard bodies and spinnerbaits are working the best for the Yellowbelly, which are holding just out from the edges, in 15-20ft of water. Pretty good numbers of fish again at Coolmunda, frozen salt water yabbies accounted for a few Yellowbelly along the rock wall and around the timber, while hopping mask vibes and silent TN60 Jackalls through the old creek beds accounted for better numbers including quite a few Cod between 60 and 85cm. Leslie Dam has seen Yellowbelly taking trolled hard bodies in the main basin, in about 20 foot of water, there were also a few landed in the deeper water out from the boat ramp on blades and tail spinners and live shrimp proved to be the most successful bait. Boondooma continues to produce good numbers of fish through the main basin, working trolled hard bodies in about 30ft of water has been successful and working tailspinners and soft vibes around the points has been good as well, while Bjelke Peterson saw reasonable numbers taking live shrimp, frozen saltwater yabbies and lipless crankbaits in 15-20ft of water. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River has produced low numbers of fish on frozen saltwater yabbies and the local rivers and creeks have fished well for Yellowbelly, with Spinnerbaits, hard bodies and bait all working well.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing at the Gold Coast has seen a few Cobia on the Artificial Reef, north of the Seaway, and a few Snapper and Pearl Perch on the northern 50’s. Inshore fishing has been good for Flathead and Mulloway on plastics and live bait, in the Seaway, off Crab Island and around the Pin, the odd Kingy at the pipeline on the run out tide; good numbers of Whiting in the Nerang River and a few Sand Crabs around the Southern end of the Broadwater. At the Sunny Coast, the inner reefs have produced Snapper, Sweetlip and Pearl Perch, the Barwon Banks and North Reef have produced Cobia, Yellowtail Kingfish, Snapper, Dolphin Fish and Wahoo while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Whiting around the Power Boat Club on Yabbies, Bream, Whiting and Flathead of the Boardwalk, Flathead and Jacks in the Mooloolah River, Whiting and Dart off most beaches and in the Noosa River, plenty of good size Whiting and Flathead throughout the system.

FRASER ISLAND

Fishing on Fraser has again been good over the last week, north of Happy Valley has been popular, with the average size of the Tailor getting up around the 55cm mark.

BASS  

Cressbrook Dam has again seen some quality fish getting about; they’re not going off at the moment, but if you put in the time, you should pick up a few, the upper reaches of the Cressbrook Creek arm and the main point in the Bull Creek arm have been good spots to target, while Tailspinners, soft plastics and live shrimp have worked the best. Somerset Dam has picked up a bit this week, The Spit, Kirkleigh and the Pelican Point area have been the best spots to target, with slow rolled soft plastics, Tailspinners and Ice Jigs proving to be effective and live shrimp have been productive for the bait anglers. Boondooma has again seen some decent Bass getting about throughout the dam, mask vibes, tailspinners, ice jigs and trolled hard bodies are all working well, the main basin, the junction and Pelican Point have been good spots to target, while spinnerbaits have worked well around the timber in the Stuart arm and Bjelke Peterson has continued to fire this week, targeting the gently sloping banks throughout the dam, with soft plastics, TN60 Jackalls and compact spinnerbaits has produced plenty of fish up to the 50cm mark.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has produced some good quality Yellowbelly again this week, the fish are still hanging just out from the weed edges, trolling shallow diving hard bodies or casting spinnerbaits and TN60 Jackalls in tight to the weed has been effective, while frozen saltwater yabbies and jigged blades have been effective in the deeper parts of the dam. Glenlyon continues to improve as the weather warms up, with good numbers of Cod up to 80cm hitting bigger spinnerbaits and trolled hard bodies, while live shrimp, frozen saltwater yabbies, trolled hard bodies and spinnerbaits are all working well for Yellowbelly. Coolmunda has again produced good numbers this week, particularly around the timber and out from the dam wall, with Jackalls, Spinnerbaits, blades and soft vibes all working well for both Cod and Yellowbelly. Leslie Dam has been fairly consistent over the school holidays, there’s been plenty of Yellowbelly over the 45cm mark, hitting Blades and trolled hard bodies in 20 to 30ft of water. There’s also been a few Cod landed, around the 65cm mark, spinnerbaits and hard bodies accounted for most of these fish. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and bait, there’s also been quite a few Silver Perch getting about. Yellowbelly have been active in the Dumeresq River again, mainly downstream of Texas, live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies are working the best and the Condamine River is continuing to fish well for Yellowbelly, with most of the weirs and popular holes, throughout the system producing good numbers.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing at the Gold Coast has seen Pearl Perch, Snapper and Kingies on the northern 50’s, while the 18’s and 24’s have produced Jewies and Snapper. Inshore fishing has seen Kingies, GT’s and Tailor in the Seaway, inside the Pin Bar has produced big Flathead on soft vibes and live baits, a few Jacks are starting to show up around the rock walls and the beaches have produced good numbers of Whiting and Dart. At the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has been a bit quiet, with only a few Snapper taken on North and Sunshine Reefs, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taking live baits and soft plastics throughout most of the estuaries; good numbers of School Jew in the Maroochy River, metal slugs and surface poppers are picking up Queenfish and Trevally in the Noosa River and a few Jacks are starting to show up around the bridge pylons and rock walls.

FRASER ISLAND

Fraser has continued to produce good numbers of Tailor, Dart and Whiting along the eastern beaches, with the northern parts being the most productive.

BASS

Cressbrook Dam produced low numbers this past week, but there were some good quality fish landed. Working soft plastics through suspended fish in 40ft of water produced the best results. Somerset Dam saw reasonable numbers of Bass caught this week, most of the fish landed were around the 40cm mark, with soft plastics, tailspinners and ice jigs working the best and Pelican Point through to Kirkleigh has been the best area to target. Boondooma has again seen some decent Bass getting about throughout the dam, mask vibes, tailspinners and soft plastics are working well on the flats, trolled hard bodies are accounting for a few through the Stuart and Boyne arms and using spinnerbaits around the timbered parts has been effective as well and Bjelke Peterson has really fired this week as well, targeting the gently sloping banks throughout the dam, with soft plastics, TN60 Jackalls and compact spinnerbaits has produced plenty of fish. Moogerah Dam is currently closed to all water based activities, due to water quality issues, so if you were thinking of heading there, you will have to look at other options.

Glenlyon has picked up a bit this week, with a few Cod up to 80cm hitting bigger spinnerbaits and trolled hard bodies, while live shrimp and blades are working the best on the Yellowbelly. Working the bottom end of Coolmunda has been good this week, particularly around the timber, Jackalls, Spinnerbaits and soft vibes have worked well for both Cod and Yellowbelly. Leslie Dam has been steady, although the eastern banks have produced some nice Silver Perch and Eel-tailed Catfish on worms, while frozen saltwater yabbies and trolled hard bodies have picked up the odd Yellowbelly in the main basin. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and bait, Yellowbelly have been active in the Dumeresq River, downstream of Texas, with live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies working the best and the Condamine River is fishing well for Yellowbelly, with most of the weirs and popular holes, throughout the system proving to be quite productive.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing at the Gold Coast this past week has seen Snapper and Amberjack on the 18’s and 24’s, a few Kingies on the 36’s and out wider, trolling skirted lures has worked well for Yellowfin Tuna. Inshore fishing has seen Bream and Jewies in the Seaway and good quality Flathead have been prominent around Crab Island, Tipplers Passage and just inside the Pin Bar. At the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has seen Snapper on 8 Mile Reef, and there’s also been the odd Mackerel getting about, while inshore fishing has seen plenty of Whiting in the lower parts of the Maroochy River, Bream and Trevally at the mouth of Bells Creek, Flathead throughout the passage on live baits; and in the Noosa River, the upper reaches are producing good numbers of smaller Mangrove Jack, while Trevally and Flathead, have been taking live bait in Woods Bay, on the incoming tide.

FRASER ISLAND

Fraser has continued to produce good numbers of Tailor, Dart, Whiting and Flathead along the eastern beaches.

FISHING REPORT   – 10-09-2015

CHANGE TO OPENING HOURS FOR TOOWOOMBA DAMS

I forgot to mention this last week, so for those of you who don’t already know, our local Toowoomba dams have a change to their opening hours from 1^st September to 30^th April. The hours at Cooby Dam are; Loveday Cove from 7am to 8 pm, the Dam Wall Picnic Area is open 7am to 7.30pm and Cressbrook Dam is open from 6am to 8.00pm, water based activities are not permitted on the dams outside of these times. BASS

Bass fishing has been pretty good again this week, with Cressbrook Dam producing some decent fish; looking in the usual haunts, such as The Eagles Nest, out from the boat ramp, Deer Island and the points in the Bull creek arm are all good options, while soft plastics, blades and live shrimp have been effective. Somerset has produced some quality fish this week, with Pelican Point through to Kirkleigh being the best area of the dam to target, soft plastics, tailspinners and blades have all worked well, but trolling crank baits tight to the bottom picked up the better quality fish. It was a bit tougher at Boondooma this week, but for those that know their way around the dam, picked up some quality fish up to 50cm; plastics, blades and trolled hard bodies worked well, while the Stuart arm, from the Junction through to the timber has been a fairly productive area. Bjelke Peterson ramped up this week, with plenty of Bass hitting blades and hard bodies, worked in 15-20ft of water throughout the dam and Moogerah has been a little slow, with most of the fish hanging around the timber,  soft plastics and live shrimp have accounted for the majority of these fish.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has produced decent numbers of Yellowbelly, the fish seem to be hanging just out from the weed edges and trolling shallow diving hard bodies or casting spinnerbaits in tight to the weed has been effective, while using bait or jigging blades in the deeper parts has produced a few fish as well. Glenlyon is a bit quiet at the moment, but there have been a few Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp, frozen saltwater yabbies and hard bodies in about 12-15ft of water, Cod have proven to be little bit harder to catch, although this should improve over the coming weeks, providing the weather stays kind to us. The fishing is still good at Coolmunda; if your targeting Yellowbelly, jigging blades and trolling hard bodies in the deeper water has been good, while working Jakall Transams around the timber has picked up the better quality fish and green coloured hard bodies have gone well for Cod. Leslie Dam saw a few Yellowbelly and Silver perch landed on worms, in about 10 foot of water, in front of the Washpool Reserve, there have also been some nice Yellowbelly caught, working the banks with Jackals, while opposite the dam wall in about 30 foot of water, has been a pretty good spot for the bait anglers. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi has produced good sized Yellowbelly on bait and hard bodies, the Balonne at St.George is fishing well, with brighter coloured lures working the best, and the Condamine River continues to fish well, with most of the weirs and popular holes, throughout the system proving to be quite productive.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing has been a bit quiet at the Gold Coast, but the36’s and 50’s have produced some quality Pearl Perch, Kingies and Amberjack, while the close artificial reefs have been good for Snapper. Inshore fishing has seen Jew, Tailor and Trevally in the Seaway on the run in tide, good numbers of Flathead on soft plastics and trolled lures throughout the Broadwater and also at the Pin, quality Whiting at the Council Chambers in the Nerang River, Tailor off the beaches and a few Sand Crabs have started to show up in the southern end of the Broadwater. At the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has produced some big Snapper on North Reef, as well as the Barwon Banks and The Hards when the weather permits a trip, some large schools of longtail tuna are getting about North Reef as well, with some yellowfin amongst them and some Parrot and Pearlies are coming from the reefs Northeast of Double Island point. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of big Whiting around the Power Boat Club, quality Flathead on soft plastics at the bar entrance, small Trevally in the Pelican Waters canals, some decent Bass in the upper reaches of the Mooloolah River; and in the Noosa River, Tailor are hitting surface poppers in Woods Bay, big Flathead and Whiting throughout, some nice Jewies to 80cm in the deeper holes and the upper reaches have seen some nice Mangrove Jack getting about.

FISHING REPORT   – 03-09-2015

BASS

A bit of an improvement on the Bass scene this week, Cressbrook Dam has produced some fish out from the boat ramp, there’s also some schools showing up from there through to the Eagles Nest, live shrimp, soft plastics, soft vibes and tailspinners have worked the best. A few more fish at Somerset as well, with Queen Street and Kirkleigh being the best places to target, soft plastics, tailspinners and soft vibes have all worked well, while live shrimp and trolling crank baits have been better options. Boondooma has again seen good numbers of Bass taken on ice jigs, soft vibes and tailspinners around Pelican Point and The Junction, trolled hard bodies have also picked up a few through the narrows. Trolling deep diving lures in the old creek beds has been effective at Bjelke Peterson and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on mask vibes and tailspinners, looking in 30 – 35ft of water, just out from the timber has been a good option.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies and blades in about 30ft of water, trolling smaller lures tight to the weed edges has picked up a few as well. Glenlyon has seen a few Cod between 60 and 70cm, taken on trolled and cast hard bodies, looking around structure will give the best results. At Leslie Dam, anglers managed to land some nice Yellowbelly on both lures and bait, the Black Boys produced good numbers of fish on bait, while the lure anglers also managed to land a few up past the Black Boys while casting Jackalls at the structure. Coolmunda has seen blades and soft vibes working well for Yellowbelly and there’s plenty of Cod hitting trolled hard bodies throughout the dam. Boondooma Dam has again produced good sized Yellowbelly on trolled hard bodies through the narrows and Bjelke Peterson has also produced good quality Yellowbelly again, working TN60 Jackalls around Bass Point has worked well, while spinnerbaits and hard bodies have picked up a few around the timber.  As for the rivers, the Goondiwindi area has been steady, with only low numbers of Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies, the Balonne River at St.George has seen some decent size Yellowbelly hitting green and yellow hard bodies and the Condamine River around the Warwick area fished reasonably well for Yellowbelly on crank baits and surface lures produced a couple of Cod.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing has seen a few Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and 24’s and out wider, Kingfish, Amberjack and Snapper have been caught on the 50’s, while inshore has seen the sand pumping jetty fishing well for Trevally and Tailor on the incoming tide, smaller Kingies and school Jew in the Seaway on the morning tide change, Bream around the bridges in the canals, Flathead at the Aldershots and Kalinga Bank and a few Sand Crabs are showing up around Crab Island. At the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has seen most reefs holding mixed reef fish and Snapper up to 8kg; Jigs, soft plastics and baits, like pilchards and live yakka’s fished on the bottom have worked well. There’s also been a few Yellowfin and Long Tail Tuna getting about. While inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead throughout the Passage and the Maroochy River, Bream and Whiting at Military Jetty, Trevally are hitting surface lures around structure in most of the canals and the Noosa River has produced a few Jacks on live bait, under the bridges at night and the river mouth has been firing for Flathead and Trevally, on the incoming tide.

FRASER ISLAND

Still getting good reports of Tailor and Dart along the eastern beaches, with the northern part of the island producing slightly better quality fish.

 

Fishing Report 27-08-15

FISHING REPORT   – 27-08-2015

COD CLOSED SEASON APPROACHING

A closed season applies to Murray cod from 1 September to 30 November in all Queensland waters contained in the Murray Darling Drainage Division; this applies to the Condamine, Macintyre, Dumeresq, Weir, Moonie, Balonne, Warrego and Paroo Rivers. DURING THIS TIME MURRAY COD MUST NOT BE TAKEN OR TARGETED IN THESE WATERWAYS. An exception to this closed season applies to Beardmore, Connolly, Cooby, Coolmunda, Glenlyon, Leslie and Storm King Dams, where the fish are actually stocked.

BASS
Cressbrook produced some quality Bass this week, using live shrimp up near the eagles nest provided the best results. Still good shows of fish at Somerset, which have again produced some good quality Bass on Soft Plastics, tailspinners and live shrimp, while the flats on the big house side of Pelican Point and also Queen Street have been the spots to target. Ice jigs and vertically jigged blades, worked in 25-35ft of water have been the most productive at Boondooma this week, Pelican Point and throughout the Stuart arm have been the pick of the spots and live shrimp have picked up the odd Bass off the steeper points in Bjelke Peterson.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing the odd Yellowbelly on trolled shallow diving hard bodies, working them near the weed beds, working them along the steeper banks in the northern arm has worked the best and the land based anglers have picked up the odd fish on frozen saltwater yabbies. Glenlyon has seen a few Yellowbelly taken on frozen saltwater yabbies and the afternoons have been productive for Cod, with some nice fish up to 80cm taken on trolled lures. Coolmunda has been hit and miss, some people are catching plenty, while others have struggled. For those that were there at the right time, blades and soft vibes picked up some quality Yellowbelly to 55cm, while some cracking Cod, up to a metre were also landed. Leslie Dam has fished quite well again this past week, the bait anglers managed to land some quality fish on shrimps and saltwater yabbies in the main basin, in about 30ft of water, the odd fish was taken on trolled hard body lures along the Washpool bank, while ZX Blades and soft vibes accounted for some nice fish in various spots around the dam. Bjelke Peterson Dam produced a few Yellowbelly on live shrimp, just off Bass Point, and Somerset has produced good quality Yellowbelly again, trolling hard bodies through schooled fish has been effective. As for the rivers, the Macintyre river at Goondi has dirtied up a bit, which has seen only the odd Yellowbelly biting on frozen saltwater yabbies, the Dumeresq been quiet, with only a few fish taking bait and not a lot has changed here locally, with the upper reaches of the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick still producing a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing has produced again at the Gold Coast, with plenty of Snapper and Cobia taken on the 24’s and 36’s and the 50’s have fished really well for Kingies and Amberjack, while inshore has seen the Seaway fishing well for Trevally and Kingies along the northern wall, quality Flathead and Bream on soft plastics throughout the Jumpinpin area and also around Wavebreak Island. At the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has seen the Barwon Banks producing Snapper, Pearl Perch and the odd Cobia, North and Sunshine Reef have produced big Snapper, mainly at dawn and dusk, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk, soft plastics have worked well for Flathead throughout the passage and the Maroochy River, while the Noosa River has produced good numbers of quality Bream and Flathead, Jewies along the ski run on live bait and most of the river mouths have produced big Whiting up to 43cm.

till fairly good reports coming from Fraser this week, with most gutters along the eastern beaches producing good numbers of Tailor, Dart and Whiting and the odd bigger Flathead.

BASS

Not a lot has changed at Cressbrook this week, there’s quite a few fish showing up, but not big numbers getting caught; out from the boat ramp, around the Eagles Nest and also out off the points in the main basin have again been the better spots to look, using soft plastics, soft vibes, tailspinners and blades will work, as always, live shrimp will work in those same areas. Still good shows of fish at Somerset, which have again produced some good quality Bass on Blades, Soft Plastics, tailspinners and live shrimp, while Pelican Point, Bay 13 and Queen Street have again been the pick of the spots. Boondooma has fished well again this week, with good numbers of quality Bass taking blades and tailspinners, cast to the edges, particularly in the timbered area of the Stuart arm, there’s also been some bigger fish taken on blades in the main basin, Moogerah is still producing a few Bass on a variety of lures, including soft plastics, soft vibes, tailspinners and blades, looking in 25-35ft of water, on the flats out from the timber should provide the best results.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing the odd Yellowbelly on trolled shallow diving hard bodies, working them near the weed beds, in the northern arm has worked the best. Glenlyon has seen a few Yellowbelly taken on trolled hard bodies, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies are still a good option and spinnerbaits have picked up a couple of Cod. Coolmunda has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly on bait and trolled hard bodies on the drop offs and along the rock wall, there’s also been a few Cod taken on hard bodies around the timber. Leslie Dam saw reasonable numbers of Yellowbelly hitting smaller trolled hard bodies, working the narrower part of the dam, near the Black Boys, and for the bait anglers, using frozen saltwater yabbies, in the deeper parts of the main basin has produced and worms have accounted for a few nice Silver Perch, off the bank near the Washpool Reserve. Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson Dam have seen good numbers of Yellowbelly taking trolled hard bodies throughout the main basins in both dams and casting blades and spinnerbaits to the edges has been effective as well, and Somerset has produced good quality Yellowbelly again, casting reaction lures to the edges and working blades and soft vibes through schooled fish has been effective. As for the rivers, the Macintyre river at Goondi, has seen a few Cod hitting surface lures, while quality Yellowbelly are biting on frozen saltwater yabbies and smaller trolled hard bodies and the upper reaches of the Condamine River, from Cecil Plains to Warwick has again produced a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

COASTAL FISHING
Offshore fishing has been good again at the Gold Coast, with plenty of Snapper and Jewies taken on the 24’s and 36’s and the 50’s have fished really well for Kingfish and Amberjack, while inshore has seen the Seaway fishing well for Jewies and Bream along the rock walls, quality Flathead and Bream on soft plastics throughout the Jumpinpin area and inside the Jumpinpin Bar has been productive for Tailor. Offshore fishing at the Sunny Coast, has seen Murphys Reef, Caloundra 12 Mile and the Barwon Banks producing Snapper, Moses Perch and Jewies, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk, soft plastics have worked well for Flathead in the Maroochy River and the Noosa River has produced Golden Trevally along the rock walls, on metal slugs, Jewies along the ski run on live bait and the river mouth has produced decent numbers of Tailor at dawn and dusk.

Good reports from Fraser again this week, with most gutters along the eastern beaches producing good numbers of Tailor, Dart and Whiting.
