FISHING REPORT   –   09-04-2015

EASTER WRAP UP

Even with a poor weather prediction for the Easter long weekend, plenty of people got out to our local impoundments for a bit of camping and fishing. There were mixed reports, with people fishing waterways that they knew, having success, while anyone who went somewhere they weren’t familiar with, did it a bit tough.
 
BASS

Cressbrook Dam saw a few Bass caught over the weekend, even though they’re getting harder to catch. Working blades through the schooled fish just out from the campgrounds worked well, there’s still quite a few smaller fish with the odd bigger one in amongst them and the Eales Nest area saw a couple landed as well. Boondooma Dam continues to produce reasonable numbers of Bass, working blades, trolling hard bodies or using live Shrimp around the points throughout the dam and working spinnerbaits around the timber in the Stuart arm has been very effective. Not a lot has changed at Bjelke Peterson this week, casting Blades and Spinnerbaits to the edges at the bottom end of the dam has worked well, while working lures or using live shrimp around the timber has been good also, Moogerah really fired last week, with anglers having success fishing the edge of the timbered area, as well as the flats just out from the day use boat ramp, spinnerbaits, TN60s and Piranhas picked up most of the fish, however, over the weekend, there was an inflow into the dam, which has quietened things down a bit.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam produced low numbers of Yellowbelly over the weekend, frozen saltwater yabbies and TN60 Jackalls worked the best, just out from the dam wall buoy line. Boondooma Dam also produced good numbers of quality Yellowbelly, the timbered area of the Boyne arm was the spot to be, with bait and spinnerbaits accounting for the majority of the fish. While at Bjelke Peterson, using bait at the start of the timber has proven successful. Coolmunda Dam also fished well this week, with a few Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies and brighter coloured spinnerbaits, around the timber, there was also a couple of Cod caught, trolling hard bodies over the old creek bed, just out from the boat ramp, with the biggest fish going 86cm. Leslie Dam saw a slight improvement over the Easter break, with some big catfish and Yellowbelly being landed off the bank at the Washpool on worms and frozen saltwater yabbies. The lure anglers had mixed results, with a lot of fish   suspended at 15ft, when located; these fish were falling for blades and lipless crankbaits. There was also a couple of legal sized Murray Cod caught in the main basin on trolled hard bodies. Glenlyon saw an increase in the numbers of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch taking live shrimp and worms. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi saw low numbers of Yellowbelly and the odd smaller Murray Cod taken on frozen saltwater yabbies, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits, however it’s had a slight rise, which has slowed things down even more. The Dumeresq and Condamine Rivers have also had freshes through them, which have made them a bit slow, but there were a few reports of a couple of Yellowbelly being caught in the Pratten area.

COASTAL FISHING

The Gold Coast has continued to produce Spotty and Spanish Mackerel on trolled lures, out from the Pin bar and the odd Snapper had been landed early morning on the 18’s and 24’s. The north wall of the Seaway is producing Mulloway, Kingies and Flathead, on the tide changes; Jewies and Tailor in the deeper holes, inside the Pin bar and the southern Broadwater has seen plenty of Sand Crabs getting about. While at the Sunshine Coast, Spanish and Spotty Mackerel are still about, but the numbers are starting to decline, Mac Tuna are hitting metal slugs on Curramundi and 5 Mile Reefs, Sunshine and North Reef have produced a mixed bag of reef fish, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has seen a few Flathead and Bream taken off the Boardwalk at the top of the tide, Golden Trevally near the Power Boat Club, Trevally and Tailor off Moffat Beach, and the Noosa River has produced quality Trevally, Jacks and Flathead at the river mouth and plenty of Whiting are taking  saltwater yabbies and surface poppers throughout the river.

BASS

Cressbrook Dam produced some decent numbers of Bass on the weekend, there’s a decent school just out from the campgrounds and blades have worked well on these fish, there are quite a few smaller fish with the odd bigger one in amongst them. Boondooma Dam continues to produce reasonable numbers of Bass, working blades, trolling hard bodies or using live Shrimp around the points throughout the dam and working spinnerbaits around the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms has been very effective. Not a lot has changed at Bjelke Peterson this week, casting Blades and Spinnerbaits to the edges has worked well, while working lures or using live shrimp around the timber has been good also, Moogerah and Maroon are both fishing well, with anglers at Moogerah having success fishing the edge of the timbered area with TN60s and Piranhas and Maroon has seen live shrimp working the best, but the lure anglers had success along the weed edges while using spinnerbaits and soft plastics.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam is still producing a few Yellowbelly at the moment, looking in 40ft of water, out from the main point opposite the boatramp has been productive, with deep diving hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies working the best, while trolling shallow diving lures just out from the weed edges, has produced a few as well. Boondooma Dam has also seen pretty good numbers of quality Yellowbelly throughout the dam, similar tactics as used for the Bass will give you success, while at Bjelke Peterson, trolling hard bodies or using bait around the points, drop-offs and  timbered edges has proven successful. Coolmunda Dam has picked up a bit this week, with a few Yellowbelly taking frozen saltwater yabbies and trolled lures, working the old creek bed at the southern end of the dam has been a good spot to target and brighter coloured spinnerbaits, worked slowly around the timber has picked up some quality fish as well. Leslie Dam remains fairly quiet, with not too much to report. There’s only been a few legal Yellowbelly landed so far this week, the majority of these fish were taken on trolled hard body lures, there was also a few fish taken in the main basin on live shrimp. Glenlyon has been a little quiet also, with only low numbers of Yellowbelly and Silver Perch taking live shrimp and worms. As for the rivers, the Macintyre at Goondiwindi is a lot clearer, which has seen some fairly good numbers of Yellowbelly and the odd smaller Murray Cod, taken on frozen saltwater yabbies, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits, the Dumeresq at Texas has seen a few Yellowbelly taking bait, while a few Cod have been hitting surface lures; and locally, the Condamine has started to see a few fish landed as the water clarity improves, it’s still not easy, but the upper reaches has been the better area to target.

COASTAL FISHING

The wind is looking like dropping off by Saturday, so until then it won’t be very nice at all. Earlier in the week, the Gold Coast continued to produce Mackerel, as well as Yellowfin Tuna on trolled lures, from Jumpinpin right through to Mermaid Reef, a few Pearl Perch were starting to show up on the 50’s and the odd Snapper had been landed on the 18’s and 24’s. The Seaway is producing Mulloway and Kingies, on the run out tide; the weed beds throughout the Broadwater are producing plenty of Squid and Gar and the southern Broadwater has seen plenty of Sand Crabs getting about. While at the Sunshine Coast, Spanish and Spotty Mackerel are about in good numbers at 12 Mile and Chardons Reefs and Sunshine Reef has produced Long Tail and Yellowfin Tuna, as well as a mixed bag of reef fish, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has seen a few Flathead and Bream taken off the Boardwalk, quality Whiting around Military Jetty, Jacks and Trevally are biting on live bait throughout the canals, and the Noosa River has produced quality Jacks and Flathead on plastics, at the river mouth, a few small Whiting are taking fresh saltwater yabbies and fresh Squid has picked up some quality Jewies off the beaches.

BASS

There have been limited reports from Cressbrook Dam this week, although a few Bass were landed in the Bull Creek arm of the dam on live Shrimp and the Cressbrook Creek arm has again produced a few fish on Spinnerbaits and Blades. Boondooma Dam has fished a bit tougher this past week, there’s plenty of undersized Bass around Leizagangs and The Junction, while Spinnerbaits and Blades accounted for some better fish around Pelican Point. Slightly quieter this week at Bjelke Peterson, but casting Blades and Spinnerbaits to the edges and working them close to the bottom has produced a few fish and trolling hard bodies around the points has enticed a few smaller Bass. Somerset Dam has produced some quality Bass over the past week, working soft plastics through suspended fish, in 40ft of water, at Pelican Point has been good, the start of the timber at Kirkleigh saw some decent catches on Soft Vibes and Spinnerbaits and Moogerah Dam has produced some nice Bass on soft plastics and blades; just off the timber in the main basin proved to be the best spot.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD
Cooby Dam has seen pretty good numbers of Yellowbelly taking Ecogear ZX blades, trolled lures and frozen saltwater yabbies, out from the pontoon, the point opposite the boat ramp and the right hand side just out from the buoy line at the wall have been the best spots. Boondooma Dam has again produced good numbers of quality Yellowbelly, mainly in the Boyne arm, on bait, TN60 Jackalls and Spinnerbaits, while at Bjelke Peterson, the bottom end of the dam has provided the best catches, with Spinnerbaits and trolled hard bodies working the best. Coolmunda Dam fished well over the weekend, with anglers having success around the timber on TN60 Jackalls and Imakatsu Piranhas, live shrimp worked the best for the bait fishermen. Leslie Dam didn’t break any records over the past week; the bait anglers did manage to land a few quality Yellowbelly, as well as some reasonable sized Silver Perch and Eel Tailed Catfish, live shrimp and worms proved to be the most successful bait to use, while the lure anglers had success casting blades and soft vibes at the submerged rocks in the main basin. Glenlyon is producing good numbers of Yellowbelly, Silver Perch and Eel Tail Catfish at the moment, frozen saltwater yabbies, live shrimp and trolled hard bodies have all been effective, there were a few Cod hooked on Spinnerbaits around the timber. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi is finally starting to clear in the town reaches, which has seen Cod taking hard body lures, while lipless crankbaits have worked well for the Yellowbelly and the Dumeresq at Texas has produced reasonable numbers of Cod on Spinnerbaits and hard body lures, with a couple of Yellowbelly taken on bait.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing at the Gold Coast has continued to produce Mackerel on trolled lures and drift baits at Palm and Mermaid Reefs and the 24’s and 36’s have seen good numbers of Snapper and Trag Jew taken. The Spit pipeline has produced stacks of Jewies and Trevally on the incoming tide, on live bait, there’s also been a few small Snapper in amongst them, plenty of good size Whiting in the Nerang River and Kalinga Bank has been a good area for Flathead. While at the Sunshine Coast, Spanish Mackerel and Long Tail Tuna are taking trolled lures, good numbers of Snapper on the northern reefs, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has seen plenty of Whiting on the flats and Bream in the deeper holes in the Passage, Trevally and Queenies in the Pelican Waters canals, Maroochy and Noosa Rivers have seen some quality Jacks getting about, plenty of Flathead and Queenies at the mouth of the Noosa River and good numbers of Jewies off the beaches at night.

MILLMERRAN CARP BUSTER COMP
I thought I would start with some stats from the Millmerran Carp Buster Comp 2 weeks ago. There was a total of 449 fish caught, adding up to an overall weight of 280kg. The biggest was 4.45kg and the most Carp caught by an adult was 50. They are hoping to make it a twice yearly event, which will probably see another event in Sept/Oct this year. Well done to everyone involved in organising the event and those of you who participated.

BASS

Cressbrook Dam has produced quite a few smaller Bass this week, out from the boat ramp and across to the buoy line has been a good area to target, while the Cressbrook Creek arm is still worth a look as well and working Blades and plastics through these fish has provided the best results. Boondooma Dam has again produced some decent catches of Bass; there’s still a lot of smaller fish about. Ice jigs, soft plastics and tailspinners have again worked well at Leizagangs, Pelican Point and The Junction, while bait and spinnerbaits accounted for a few in the timbered area of the Boyne and Stuart arms. Bass are still fairly active in Bjelke Peterson, casting Jackals, Blades and Spinnerbaits around the timbered edges has produced quality fish, while trolling hard bodies on the drop-offs has seen a few landed as well. Somerset Dam has produced some quality Bass over the past week, with the biggest reported at 56cm, the start of the timber at Kirkleigh and Pelican Point were the hot spots last weekend, while trolled hard bodies and live shrimp worked the best and Moogerah saw some quality Bass landed towards the back of the dam, with blades, tail spinners and plastics all working well.

Cooby Dam has seen the odd Yellowbelly taking Ecogear ZX blades, just out from the dam wall buoy line; trolled lures and frozen saltwater yabbies have also produced a few decent fish along the right hand bank, just out from the buoy line. Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson continue to produce good numbers of quality Yellowbelly, the Stuart and Boyne arms have been the spots to target the fish in Boondooma, with live shrimp and trolled hard bodies picking up the best numbers, while at Bjelke Peterson, the points and timbered areas have provided the best catches. Coolmunda Dam has seen some good quality Yellowbelly taken in the timber on saltwater yabbies, Jackalls and spinnerbaits, good size Silver Perch on live worms, but the Cod have been a bit quiet. Leslie Dam has seen Yellowbelly being landed on both lures and bait, most of the fish are holding close to the bottom and Blades and Mask Vibes have been working the best on these fish, there’s good numbers holding in the rocky structure across from the dam wall and frozen saltwater yabbies have accounted for some quality fish around the Black Boys. Glenlyon is still producing good numbers of Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies and live worms, the Cod have been a bit quiet, but there was a couple caught at Stockyard point on Spinnerbaits. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River at Goondi has been a bit quiet this week, with only a few Yellowbelly taken on bait in the town reaches and the Dumeresq at Texas has produced reasonable numbers of Cod on spinnerbaits, while bait accounted for a few Yellowbelly.

COASTAL FISHING

Offshore fishing at the Gold Coast has continued to produce Mackerel on trolled lures and drift baits from the front of the Seaway right through to Mermaid Reef and a bit wider of the 50’s has produced heaps of Blue Marlin on trolled skirts. The Seaway has seen good numbers of Jewies on the incoming tide, on live bait, there’s also been a few Kingies in amongst them, plenty of good sized Whiting in the Broadwater, and Flathead have been taking soft plastics at Kalinga Bank. While at the Sunshine Coast, Spanish and Spotty Mackerel are still about in big numbers, right along the coast, trolling lures has been the best method, while inshore fishing at Caloundra has seen plenty of big Whiting on the flats in the Passage and Flathead and Bream off the boardwalk, Trevally in the Pelican Waters canals, the Maroochy River has seen a few Threadfin and Blue Salmon getting about, Jacks around the bridge pylons, plenty of Flathead, Trevally and Jewies at the mouth of the Noosa River and good numbers of Jewies off the beaches as well.

BASS

Cressbrook Dam is still a bit patchy, again, there has been some quality fish taking spinnerbaits and Jackalls around the edges, early morning and late afternoon, out from the boat ramp and across to the buoy line are still worth a look, the Cressbrook Creek arm has produced a few fish as well, with blades and tailspinners proving to be effective on these fish. Boondooma Dam has again produced some decent catches of Bass, although there are a lot of smaller fish about. Ice jigs and tailspinners worked well at Leizagangs, Pelican Point and The Junction, while bait accounted for a few in the timbered area of the Boyne arm. The schooled fish were shutting down fairly quickly, so the best option was to keep moving around the different locations. Heaps of fish caught at Bjelke Peterson last weekend, casting Blades and Spinnerbaits around the timbered edges and also working blades and tailspinners on the flats, near Bass Point were the best options, there were also a lot of smaller fish caught here as well.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has again produced a few quality Yellowbelly, near the dam wall buoy line, and along the bank in the northern arm of the dam, TN60 Jackalls, Piranhas and frozen saltwater yabbies have worked the best on these fish. Boondooma has produced good numbers of Yellowbelly again, the majority of fish are being caught on bait, with Leizagangs and the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne producing the majority of the fish, but trolling hard body lures from The Junction, to the timber in the Stuart arm, should pick you up a few fish as well. Coolmunda Dam has fished quite well over the past week or so, we have received several reports of quality fish being landed on lures and bait. There were good numbers of legal sized Cod and plenty of Yellowbelly landed over the weekend on spinnerbaits and larger hard body lures. There was a slight improvement on previous weeks at Leslie, with reports of some quality Yellowbelly landed in the main basin, along the western bank opposite the concrete boat ramps, these fish were landed on shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies. The lure anglers also had more success than previous weeks, with blades and TN60 Jackalls working well around the Black Boys. Glenlyon produced a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch on live worms and frozen saltwater yabbies, while trolled hard bodies accounted for a few Yellowbelly and some nice Cod, including a 97cm fish. As for the rivers, casting spinnerbaits around the snags has worked well on the Cod, in the Dumeresq River at Texas and the Macintyre at Goondi saw a few Cod and Yellowbelly taking worms and frozen saltwater yabbies.

COASTAL FISHING
Offshore fishing at the Gold Coast has seen plenty of Spanish Mackerel on Mermaid Reef and the 24’s, while Pearl Perch and Kingfish have been prominent on the 50’s and the closer bait grounds have produced good numbers of Tuna. Inshore fishing has seen the Southport Seaway producing good sized Jewies and Jacks along the rock walls, a few Flathead and Whiting at the Pin, Kingfish and Trevally around the Pipeline at the Spit and the Jumpinpin Bar has seen plenty of Sharks, while at the Sunny Coast, look for Mackerel on the closer reefs, while Murphy’s and Sunshine Reefs have again produced quality Snapper and Sweetlip. Inshore fishing has seen Grunter Bream off the Boardwalk, the sand banks near Bells Creek are producing plenty of Whiting, Trevally and Jacks around structure in the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers and all of the river mouths are seeing a few Tailor getting about.

MILLMERRAN GEARS UP FOR ITS SECOND CARP BUSTER COMP

Organisers of Millmerran’s Carp Buster Fishing Competition on March 7 and 8 are hoping the Condamine’s banks will be slapping with European Carp when anglers join the fight against this pest fish for a second year. The weekend-long event at Yarramalong Weir is again being hosted by Millmerran Landcare after 70 anglers caught more than 260 carp at Millmerran’s first carp buster in late 2013. Registration for the Millmerran Carp Buster and breakfast kicks off at 7am on Saturday, March 7, and anglers are able to cast their lines along waterways across the Millmerran district.

Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for kids or $25 for families. Final lines are reeled in at 11am on Sunday, March 8, with prizes on offer for mystery weights. The weekend includes raffles, barbecues and camping is available.

Moogerah Dam fished quite well over the weekend despite the heavy boating traffic; there were some decent 40cm plus Bass taken on soft plastics and Tail Spinners and Maroon also produced some good Bass, with most fish holding tight to the weed edges. Spinnerbaits, blades and plastics all worked well.

Not a lot has changed at Coolmunda Dam this week; there have been reports of reasonable numbers of Yellowbelly with some quality Cod as well. Frozen Saltwater Yabbies and live Worms seem to be the best bait, but also try casting Jackalls, Spinnerbaits and hard bodies around the timber if you want to chase the Cod. Things have picked up this week at Leslie Dam, Leslie Dam anglers had more success this week than in previous weeks, trolling TN60 Jackalls up near the “Black Boys”, saw some good quality Yellowbelly landed, there were some nice Silver Perch landed off the bank on worms and there were also a couple 70+cm Cod landed on Sunday afternoon on hard bodies and Glenlyon is still producing good numbers of Yellowbelly and a few smaller Cod, mainly on live shrimp and trolled hard bodies.

COASTAL FISHING

With the improved conditions, anglers have finally been able to venture offshore, at the Gold Coast, the 18’s and 24’s have produced good numbers of Spanish Mackerel, while Pearl Perch and Kingfish have been prominent on the 50’s and  inshore fishing has seen the Southport Seaway producing good sized Jewies along the north wall, around the tide changes, a few Flathead around the Aldershots, Crab Island and Kalinga Bank and the Jumpinpin Bar has seen plenty of Jewies and Dart getting about, while at the Sunny Coast, look for Mackerel along the dirty water line, about 6 mile out, while Murphy’s and Sunshine Reefs have produced quality Snapper and Sweetlip. Inshore fishing has seen Grunter Bream off the Boardwalk, Jewies at Military Jetty, plenty of Jacks and Flathead in the Noosa River and most of the estuaries are producing good numbers of Whiting and Bream.

Last weekends predicted weather didn’t happen as expected, so there has been little or no impact on the impoundments, apart from Somerset receiving plenty of water. This has resulted in water being released into Wivenhoe, which has seen the water level go from 80% to 95%. All impoundments within our local area that were closed were all reopened at the start of the week.

BASS

Cressbrook Dam is a bit patchy at the moment, so use your sounder to find the fish, out from the boat ramp and across to the buoy line would be worth a look, the Cressbrook Creek arm is worth a look as well and if you find the fish, try casting blades, spinnerbaits, Jackals, and hopefully you might pick up a few. There has been quite a few smaller fish landed here in the past month, so remember the minimum length for Bass is 30cm. Boondooma Dam has again produced some decent catches of Bass. Most of the fish have been caught around the points or timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms, mainly on Spinnerbaits and Blades, but you could also try trolling hard bodies in about 15 - 20 feet of water. It’s not easy at Bjelke Peterson at the moment, however casting Jackals, Blades and Spinnerbaits around Bass Point and on the banks below the Wineries has produced a few fish, while trolling hard bodies has seen a few landed as well and at Maroon, there were plenty of smaller Bass caught on Jackalls, Piranhas, Blades and Soft Plastics, most of the fish were landed along the weed edges.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD

Cooby Dam has been a little quiet also, but there is the odd Yellowbelly and Silver Perch about. Try targeting these with live Worms, and trolling lures around the rock wall area could also prove fruitful. Cressbrook has seen a few quality Yellowbelly hitting spinnerbaits around the Eagles Nest area, Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson have again produced good numbers of quality Yellowbelly, the majority of fish are being caught on bait, but casting Jackalls, Blades and Spinnerbaits, or trolling hard body lures should pick you up a few fish as well. Coolmunda Dam has improved over the past week as the water clears up; there have been reports of reasonable numbers of Yellowbelly with some quality Cod as well. Frozen Saltwater Yabbies and live Worms seem to be the best bait, but also try casting Jackalls, Spinnerbaits and hard bodies around the timber if you want to chase the Cod. Things have been fairly slow over the past week at Leslie Dam, anglers have managed to land a few nice fish but they have had to work hard for them, there’s been reports of a few nice Yellowbelly landed in the main basin on frozen saltwater yabbies, one local angler landed a few legal sized fish, while casting spinnerbaits around structure and Glenlyon is still producing good numbers of Yellowbelly on bait and Spinnerbaits, as well as plenty of Silver Perch on worms.

COASTAL FISHING

Very limited opportunities offshore this week due to the weather, however inshore fishing has seen the Southport Seaway producing good sized Jewies on the incoming tide and a few Flathead around the Aldershots and Kalinga Bank, while at the Sunny Coast, the Passage has produced a lot of smaller Bream and Whiting and a few Flathead around the mouth of Bells Creek and the rock walls at the entrance to the Noosa River have produced fairly good numbers of Trevally and Flathead at the top of the run in tide.
