FISHING REPORT   – 27-09-2012

BASS

Bass fishing is still quite good around the area at the moment, Cressbrook, has produced Bass on soft plastics around Deer Island and Eagles Nest, you could also try casting TN60 Jackalls, blades and lightly weighted soft plastics to the edges. The fish at Boondooma shut down last weekend, after some pretty good storms Friday afternoon, but it has started to pick up through the week, with a few Bass being taken on slow rolled soft plastics and mask vibes around balancing rock and Pelican Point, while the timbered area of the Stuart arm has produced fish on live shrimp, Spinnerbaits and TN60 Jackalls. Bjelke Petersen dam has again seen low numbers of Bass taken on trolled hard bodies and live bait. Somerset is still producing plenty of big Bass throughout the dam, with Pelican Point and the Eagles nest areas being the most productive, ice jigs, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the most fish.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD.

Cooby Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly and some Eel tail Catfish caught on live shrimp around the edges, at  Boondooma, trolling hard bodied lures just off the bottom around rocky points and edges has produced some nice fish,  casting TN60 Jackalls, Spinnerbaits and using live shrimp and worms in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms has seen some decent fish boated as well. Bjelke Peterson has seen some quality Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies, Glenlyon Dam has picked up over the past week, with plenty of Yellowbelly on the move, using live shrimp and trolling shallow diving hard bodies has landed the most fish, the Yellowbelly have again been quite active at Coolmunda over the past week, with some decent fish up to 4kg caught on a range of lures, live shrimp and frozen saltwater yabbies, there has also been the odd Cod about and Leslie Dam has again fished well this week, with some good quality Yellowbelly up to 54cm, as well as a few Cod caught on live shrimp, worms and trolled hard bodies, bank fishing has also produced good numbers of fish. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still producing good numbers of Yellowbelly and Eel tail Catfish throughout the river, these have been taken mainly on bait, trolled hard bodies and spinnerbaits, the Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has seen good numbers of quality Yellowbelly taken on live bait and trolled lures, casting spinnerbaits has also worked well, the upper and lower reaches of the Dumeresq River at Texas has produced plenty of good size Yellowbelly and the odd eel tail catfish, the best method has been using live worms

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Conditions have been far from perfect for offshore fishing this past week, however there have been reasonable numbers of Mac Tuna and Squire on the closer reefs and the outer reefs have produced some quality Pearl Perch, Snapper and Cobia, while inshore, the Tweed River has seen a few nice Jack’s around the rock walls and structure, a few Flathead on the move throughout and Sand crabs have started to show in the upper reaches, up around Southport, there’s been a few Jewies and small Cobia in the Seaway and there’s been some good catches of Flathead and Sand crabs around Kalinga Banks.

SUNSHINE COAST

Very quiet offshore this week, with no reports coming in. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taken throughout the passage at Caloundra and also in the Maroochy River, Bream and Whiting are active throughout most of the creeks and rivers, and the Noosa River has produced a few Jacks, Trevelly and Tailor throughout.

HERVEY BAY

Good numbers of Whiting and Flathead off the beaches, Barra and Threadfin Salmon on trolled lures in the Burrum River and Fraser Island is producing plenty of average size Tailor.

CLIFTON CARP COMPETITION THIS WEEKEND

 

If you’re looking for some family fun this weekend, head out to the Clifton Carp Competition, which is being held on the Condamine River at Victoria Hill. BASS

Somerset is still firing, with plenty of big Bass landed throughout the dam, anywhere from The Spit through to the timbered area at Kirkleigh, ice jigs, blades, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the most fish.

Cooby Dam has seen a few Yellowbelly and some Eel tail Catfish caught on live shrimp in the deeper parts, as well as off the banks , very similar for Yellowbelly, as with the Bass at  Boondooma, casting TN60 Jackalls and Spinnerbaits to the edges in the Stuart arm and trolling hard bodies around rocky points and edges in the main basin has worked well, you could also try using live shrimp and worms in the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms. Offshore Fishing has seen good numbers of Snapper and Cobia coming off the 18’s and 24’s, while inshore, the Tweed River around Chinderah has seen a few nice Jack’s and big Flathead on the move and it’s worth a try at the anchorage for some Whiting, up around Southport, there’s been a few Trevelly and some big Mulloway, up to 12kg in the Seaway and at the Pin, there’s been some good catches of Flathead.

 

SUNSHINE COAST

 

Offshore fishing has gone alright this week, particularly on the wider reefs with Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Tuna and Cobia showing up in good numbers. Inshore fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taken throughout the passage at Caloundra and the Maroochy River, Bream and Whiting are active throughout most of the creeks and rivers,and the Noosa River has produced a few Jacks, School Jew, Queenfish and Trevelly throughout.

 

HERVEY BAY

 

Whiting and Flathead off the beaches, Barra and Threadfin Salmon in the Burrum River and outside has seen some nice Spanish Mackerel landed.

BASS

Bass fishing is
still quite good around the area at the moment, Cressbrook was a bit quiet over
the weekend, with the weather system that went through late last week, but it
has picked up during the week, with a few fish landed along the buoy line, as
well as near the toilet block in the Bull Creek arm of the dam. There are still
plenty of schooled fish at Boondooma, with ice jigs, blades and soft plastics working
the best on those fish, casting TN60 Jackalls and Spinnerbaits to the edges and
trolling hard bodies around rocky points and edges in the main basin in about
16ft to25ft water, around the junction and at the start of the timber in both
arms of the dam, has produced some quality fish as well, there has also been
some good size fish landed on bait in the timbered area of both arms, while in
the same area, Bjelke Petersen dam has only seen a few Bass taken on trolled
hard bodies and live bait. Somerset is still firing, with plenty of big Bass
landed throughout the dam, anywhere from The Spit through to the timbered area
at Kirkleigh, ice jigs, blades, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the
most fish, and Moogerah Dam has again produced a few Bass on ice jigs, along
the ridge, out from the main boat ramp.

working surface lures around structure, late afternoon, has produced a few Cod,
on the Dumeresq River, while Yarramalong Weir near Pampas has again produced
some quality Yellowbelly on live worms, spinnerbaits and trolled lures.

Offshore
Fishing has been good, due to the weather, with big numbers of Snapper,
Kingies, Mackerel, Tuna and Cobia coming off most of the reefs, while inshore,
the Tweed River is producing quality Flathead and big Whiting
throughout, with freshly pumped Saltwater Yabbies and live Sandworms picking up
most of the fish, up around Southport, there’s been some small catches of
Tailor and undersize Mulloway in the Seaway and at the Pin, plastics have
proven popular with the Flathead, while at the bar entrance, there have been
some larger meter plus Mulloway taken on a mixture of soft plastics and live
bait.

SUNSHINE COAST

Offshore
fishing has gone well this week, with Snapper, Sweetlip, Coral Trout and a few
Cobia landed on most reefs, with the wider ones producing the bigger fish. Inshore
fishing has seen plenty of Flathead taken off the Boardwalk and throughout the
passage at Caloundra, Bream and Whiting are active through most of the creeks
and rivers, a few Jacks are starting to show up in Bells Creek and the Noosa
River has produced a few Tailor and Trevelly throughout.

HERVEY BAY

With the favourable weather conditions, anglers have been
getting in amongst some quality reef fish and pelagics on the wider reefs,
while Fraser Island is still producing some good catches of average size Tailor
during the day, while night time fishing has again seen some bigger fish landed.

BASS

Bass fishing
continues to fire around the area at the moment, Cressbrook has again produced
some quality fish, out from the boat ramp, near the buoy line, Bull Creek arm
and around Deer Island, soft plastics, ice jigs and blades are still producing
the most fish, there’s also a few starting to come off the edges, on TN60
Jackalls. There are still plenty of schooled fish at Boondooma, with
ice jigs and soft vibes working the best on those fish, casting TN60 Jackalls
and Spinnerbaits to the edges and trolling hard bodies around rocky points and
edges in the main basin in about 16ft to25ft water, near the third marker buoy
and at the start of the timber in both arms of the dam, has produced some
quality fish as well, Somerset is still firing, with plenty of big Bass landed
throughout the dam, anywhere from The Spit through to the timbered area at
Kirkleigh, ice jigs, blades, mask vibes and soft plastics have picked up the
most fish, and finally, Moogerah Dam has again produced good numbers of quality
Bass on ice jigs, blades and mask vibes, in about 28-32ft of water, working
along the ridge, out from the main boat ramp.

hopefully as the weather warms, should start to produce a few on lures as well,
very similar for Yellowbelly, as with the Bass at Boondooma, casting TN60 Jackalls and Spinnerbaits to the edges in
the Stuart arm and trolling hard bodies around rocky points and edges in the
main basin has worked well, you could also try using live shrimp and worms in
the timbered areas of the Stuart and Boyne arms. Glenlyon Dam is still a bit
quiet, with only a few Yellowbelly and a couple of smaller Cod landed in
shallower water, compared to being in deeper water over the past few weeks,
Coolmunda has seen a few Yellowbelly caught on frozen saltwater yabbies and
quite a few eel tail catfish taken off the rock wall. And Leslie Dam has picked
up this week, with some good quality Yellowbelly to 4kg and a few Cod around
75-80cm. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still producing
good numbers of Yellowbelly, as well as a few nice Cod throughout the river,
these have been taken mainly on bait, with the odd fish taking a lure, the Macintyre
River at Goondiwindi has been a little quiet in the town reaches, however,
above Boggabilla Weir and below Goondi Town Weir, there have been plenty of
Yellowbelly and a few nice Cod landed on Spinnerbaits and locally, Yarramalong
Weir near Pampas has produced some nice Yellowbelly on bait and lures.

while inshore, the Tweed River is producing quality Flathead and big
Whiting throughout, reasonable numbers of Bream and Blackfish around the rock
walls and a few decent Tailor off the beaches, up around Southport, there’s
plenty of Tailor, Trevelly and the odd Jewie taking metal slugs, soft plastics
and live bait in the Seaway, with night time producing the bigger fish, plenty
of Flathead throughout the Broadwater,
good size Whiting in the Nerang River and few Mud and Sand Crabs starting to
show up in Coombabah and Pimpama Rivers.

Offshore
fishing has been a bit quieter this week, with a few Snapper and smaller reefies landed on the closer
reefs, while the wider reefs have produced a few bigger Snapper and Mac Tuna.
At Caloundra, inshore fishing has seen plenty of Blackfish and Flathead taken
off the Boardwalk, on the run in tide, there’s also big numbers of Flathead and
large Whiting throughout the passage, Maroochy and Noosa River, the Noosa River
has also seen good numbers of Trevelly, Tailor and Hair Tail throughout and
still good numbers of Trevelly hitting surface poppers in the Pelican Waters
canals.

Fraser Island is producing plenty of average size
Tailor during the day, while night time fishing has seen some bigger fish
landed.

BASS

Bass fishing
around the area is very good at the moment with most of the dams that hold
Bass, producing good numbers. Cressbrook actually went a bit quiet over the
weekend, with the weather system that went through, but it has picked up during
the week, with some quality fish landed, in the usual spots, out from the boat
ramp, near the buoy line, Bull Creek arm and around Deer Island, soft plastics,
ice jigs and blades have produced the most fish. The fish are holding in the
deeper water at Boondooma, ice jigs and soft vibes have been working
well, ice jigs and blades have produced low numbers around the timber at Bjelke
Peterson, Somerset is still firing, with plenty of big Bass landed throughout
the dam, anywhere from The Spit through to the timbered area at Kirkleigh, ice
jigs, blades and mask vibes have picked up the most fish, and finally, Moogerah
Dam has again produced good numbers of quality Bass on ice jigs, blades and
mask vibes, in about 28-32ft of water.

the timbered area of the dam, with live bait proving to be the best. Pindari
Dam, near Inverell is still producing plenty of Yellowbelly and Cod, Glenlyon
Dam has again seen some nice Yellowbelly landed on blades and Jackalls, these
fish have mainly been in deeper water. And at Leslie Dam, small numbers of
Yellowbelly, and quite a few eel-tail catfish have been landed on live bait in
deeper water, compared to the past few weeks, where they were holding more in
10-15ft of water. As far as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still
producing good numbers of Yellowbelly, as well as a few nice Cod throughout the
river, these have been taken on frozen prawns and dark coloured lures, the Macintyre
River at Goondiwindi has picked up this week, with some nice Yellowbelly and a
few Cod taken, mainly on live bait and trolled hard body lures, and a lot of
the weirs and deeper holes along the Condamine have produced a few Yellowbelly
and the odd Cod on live bait and lures.

Fishing has seen good numbers of Snapper and Spangled Emperor on the closer
reefs and around Cook Island, while inshore, the Tweed River has produced
quality Flathead in the upper reaches, still reasonable numbers of Bream and
Blackfish around the rock walls and a few decent Tailor around the headlands,
up around Southport, there’s plenty of Trevelly and School Jew in the Seaway,
these have been targeted with live bait and bigger Squidgy Slick Rigs, good
numbers of Flathead and Bream around Crab Island and try the sand pumping
jetty, early morning for some quality Tailor on pilchards and metal slugs.

Offshore

produced some nice Flathead and Bream and a few Sand Crabs in the lower
reaches, the Noosa River has seen good catches of School Jew and Trevelly at
night, the best methods for these have been, using live bait and slow rolling
soft plastics and there’s been a few Whiting and Dart coming off the beaches.

HERVEY BAY

Offshore fishing is producing Snapper, Sweetlip,
Mangrove Jack and Coral Trout on the outer reefs, inshore has seen big Bream,
Whiting and Flathead taken off the Urangan Peir, while Fraser Island is still
producing some reasonable catches of Tailor.

BASS
Cressbrook Dam
is still producing quality bass up to 47cm, the best spots are, out from the
boat ramp, near the buoy line, Bull Creek arm and around Deer Island, soft
plastics, ice jigs and blades have produced the most fish. At Boondooma, Bass
have been caught jigging squidgy fish and Jackall Mask vibes in 60ft of water, targeting
suspended fish at 20 to 30ft, also try fishing the rocky points & edges at
the start of the Stuart timber, Bass
have been smashing TN60 Jackalls, SMAK Ice jigs and Mini coop Spinnerbaits. Still quiet at Bjelke Peterson dam at
the moment, with the odd smaller Bass being taken on ice jigs and bait around
the timbered area. Somerset has really fired up over the past week, with plenty
of big Bass landed throughout the dam, ice jigs, blades and mask vibes have
picked up the most fish. Moogerah Dam has been producing good numbers of
quality Bass on ice jigs, blades and mask vibes.

COD.

Dam, Yellowbelly are scattered throughout, there’s been the odd one taken off
the edges on Jackalls and spinnerbaits and if you can get live shrimp, high 40cm Yellowbelly have

reported
through the week in the Boyne timber & around the junction. Bjelke Peterson
Dam, has seen small numbers of Yellowbelly caught in the timbered area of the
dam, with live bait proving to be the best. As far as the rivers go, the
Balonne at St.George is still producing good numbers of Yellowbelly, as well as
a few nice Cod throughout the river. The Macintyre River at Goondiwindi has
again been a bit quiet this week. The Macintyre Brook, downstream of Coolmunda
has produced good catches of Yellowbelly and Cod, the Dumeresq River at Texas
has seen some good numbers of Yellowbelly taken on bait, downstream of the
township. Pindari Dam, near Inverell has been going off, with plenty of
Yellowbelly and Cod landed over the past week. Glenlyon Dam has again seen some
nice Yellowbelly landed, these fish have mainly been in deeper water and using
blades and live bait has produced the best results. And at Leslie Dam, small
numbers of Yellowbelly, and quite a few eel-tail catfish have been landed in
10-15ft of water, early morning, on live bait.

plenty of Tailor, Trevelly and Queenies caught around the southern end of Crab
Island, Mulloway and Trevelly on live bait and metal slugs in the Seaway, Bream

fishing has improved again this past week, with good numbers of Snapper on the
closer reefs, while the wider reefs have produced quality Pearl Perch, Amber
Jack, Parrot and Snapper to 13kg. At Caloundra, inshore fishing has seen plenty
of Bream and Blackfish taken off the Boardwalk, on the run in tide, Trevelly in
the Pelican Waters canals, Whiting throughout the passage, Pikey Bream at the
bar entrance, and in the Noosa River, School Jew at the ski run, Big Eye
Trevelly at Woods Bay and Chopper Tailor around the headlands and off the
beaches.

HERVEY BAY

Offshore fishing is producing a few Snapper on the
closer reefs, inshore has seen big Bream of the Urangan Peir, Tailor and Bream
at Kingfisher Bay, while Fraser Island is still producing some reasonable
catches of Tailor, with some nice Whiting and Flathead in amongst them.

BASSIN SERIES HEADS TO MOOGERAH THIS WEEKEND

The Bassin Teams Challenge heads to Moogerah Dam for
the third Queensland round this weekend, these tournaments provide you with the
chance to get a feel for competition fishing, anglers competing against each
other, the clock and the bass. Tournament fishing is exciting and a great way
to meet new people. They are a very social event, where families can fish
together, a couple of mates can have a
go, or a fishing club can use it as part of their event calendar, set up their
marques, flags etc and just have a great weekend. These events have a social
feel about them, but will also cater for the needs of the more seasoned
tournament angler, with lots of cash & great prizes on offer. I have fished
quite a lot of these tournaments since they started, and they are always a very
enjoyable weekend, nominations are excepted up until Friday night, for more

Cressbrook Dam
was reopened last Thursday, after being closed to boating for about a week,
there have been some quality bass up to 47cm caught in the past week, best

hit and miss at Bjelke Peterson dam at the moment, with the odd smaller Bass
being taken on ice jigs and bait around the timbered area. Very much a carbon
copy of the past few weeks at Somerset, with a few scattered fish about, and
there is the odd smaller school starting to form as well, try targeting these
fish with soft plastics and ice jigs and you should land a few, but it is still
hard work. The best areas have been from Beams Creek right through to Queen
Street.

been relatively quiet this week, with the odd Yellowbelly caught on live shrimp
in the deeper parts of the dam. In Boondooma Dam, very similar to the bass,
Yellowbelly are scattered throughout, with blades and ice jigs picking up a few
fish, there’s also been the odd one taken off the edges on Jackalls and
spinnerbaits. Bjelke Peterson Dam, has seen small numbers of Yellowbelly caught
in the timbered area of the dam, with live bait proving to be the best. As far
as the rivers go, the Balonne at St.George is still producing good numbers of
Yellowbelly, as well as a few nice Cod throughout the river. The Macintyre
River at Goondiwindi has been a bit quiet this week, this is due to a fresh in
the system, which has dirtied the water. The border rivers are producing some
decent catches of Cod on surface lures, early morning and late afternoon, or
even targeting the shaded areas during the middle parts of the day has worked
well. Glenlyon Dam has seen some nice Yellowbelly landed, these fish have
mainly been in deeper water and using blades has produced the best results. And
at Leslie Dam, small numbers of Yellowbelly, have been landed in 10-15ft of
water, early morning, on live bait.

GOLD COAST AND TWEED

Offshore
Fishing has improved with the better weather this week, there has been good
numbers of Snapper and Spangled Emperor on the closer reefs and around Cook
Island, while inshore the Tweed River has produced some Bream and Blackfish
around the rock walls and a few decent Tailor off the beaches, while up around
Southport, some fun for the anglers, with plenty of Tailor, Trevelly and
Kingies coming on surface poppers and metal slugs in the Seaway and throughout
the Broadwater, some nice Bass in Robina Lakes and a few muddies and sand crabs
in most of the estuaries.

SUNSHINE COAST

Again,
the offshore fishing has improved this past week, with a good mix of reef fish
and palegics caught on the closer reefs. At Caloundra, inshore fishing has seen
plenty of Bream taken off the Boardwalk, on the run in tide, Whiting around the
power boat club, Trevelly in the Pelican Waters canals, Flathead throughout the
passage and at the bar entrance, Jewies around the river mouths and headlands,
while the beaches have produced good catches of Bream, Dart, Whiting and
Flathead.

HERVEY BAY

Offshore fishing is producing a few Snapper on the
closer reefs, while Fraser Island is still producing some reasonable catches of
Tailor, with some nice Whiting and Flathead in amongst them.
