FISHING REPORT   – 28-07-2016

BASS

Pretty good fishing at Cressbrook this week, there has been the odd quality Bass hitting surface poppers early morning and late afternoon. No, this isn’t a misprint or a tall story; I witnessed it myself on Wednesday. There is a lot of smaller fish sitting around the 40ft mark and they have been falling for tailspinners, while working the steeper points, late afternoon with soft plastics has produced 40-45cm Bass. Boondooma has fished quite well this week, the area around the junction seems to be the most productive, while tailspinners, blades and live shrimp have picked up the majority of the fish. Bjelke Peterson has been pretty good again this week, with good numbers of Bass taken on soft plastics cast to the edges, plastics also accounted for a few suspended fish in the deeper water. Blades and soft plastics picked up a few Bass, around the weed banks at Moogerah Dam and Maroon has produced low numbers, mainly on live shrimp, fished around the weed.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD
Cooby Dam has been a bit patchy, but there has been the odd Yellowbelly hitting jigged, darker coloured blades, fished in the old creek bed out from the boat ramp. Coolmunda is still producing a few Yellowbelly on bait, trolled hard bodies and jigged blades in the old creek beds. There were a few Yellowbelly landed at Leslie this past week, anglers seemed to have the most success by vertically jigging blades; trolled hard bodies also accounted for a few nice fish in the main basin, while north of the Ski Club in the main basin and the drop offs in front of the Washpool Camp Reserve have been the best areas. Boondooma Dam has again seen plenty of Yellowbelly taking soft vibes and ice jigs in the main basin and also the timbered area of the Stuart arm, good numbers of Yellowbelly at Bjelke Peterson, with blades, soft vibes and frozen saltwater yabbies working the best. As for the rivers, it’s still a bit quiet in most; however the Condamine has produced a few Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, worms and frozen saltwater yabbies

COASTAL FISHING
Offshore fishing has been pretty good at the Gold Coast this week, with Cobia and smaller Snapper taken around the 18’s and 24’s, Snapper and Pearl Perch on the 36’s, and out wider, Kingfish and Amberjack have been prominent on the 50’s, while inshore, has seen quality Flathead on soft plastics and small minnows, throughout the Jumpinpin area, and there’s still plenty of Bream hanging around the rock walls and pylons, throughout all of the estuaries. At the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has seen the outer reefs fishing well for big Snapper and Pearl Perch, plenty of Squire and Tailor around Brays Rock and the inner reefs are producing smaller Snapper and the odd Tusk Fish. Inshore fishing has produced Bream and Luderick off the Boardwalk and at the mouth of the Maroochy River, Winter Whiting on the sand flats, near the Powerboat Club, some decent size Flathead in Bells Creek, the Mooloolah River and also the Noosa River and the Noosa River has also produced Jacks, Golden Trevally and Jewies on live baits.
FRASER ISLAND
Anglers are starting to pick up a few Tailor and Dart in most of the gutters, particularly on the southern end of the island.

FISHING REPORT   – 14-07-2016

BASS
Still some good quality Bass coming out of Cressbrook at the moment, look for schooled fish in the deeper water across from the boat ramp, also the right hand side of the Bull Creek arm, as you head towards the toilet block point and target them with soft plastics and tailspinners. A few schools of fish showing up at Somerset Dam, Pelican Point, Eagles Nest, Queen Street and the start of the timber at Kirkleigh are the better spots, with blades and soft plastics picking up a few fish. At Boondooma, the odd Bass has been caught casting blades to the edges, ice jigs, soft plastics and taispinners have worked well out from the steeper points and there’s still a few active fish at Maroon, they have mainly been around the edges and weed pockets, with soft plastics and small suspending minnows proving to be the most effective.

YELLOWBELLY AND COD
Vertically jigged blades have picked up good numbers around the Eagles Nest area at Cressbrook Dam. Not a lot happening at Glenlyon this week, with only a couple of Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp. Leslie Dam produced a few fish over the weekend and into the start of the week; anglers who fished on Saturday landed some quality Yellowbelly, in the deeper water, blades and soft vibes worked the best for the lure anglers, while live shrimp worked the best for the bait anglers. There were also a couple of legal sized Cod landed on trolled hard body lures in the main basin and the most successful spots were opposite the dam wall and near the Ski Club. Boondooma Dam saw good numbers of quality Yellowbelly taken on live shrimp and trolled hard bodies in the timbered areas of both arms of the dam. Bjelke Peterson produced low numbers on frozen saltwater yabbies around the timbered parts. As for the rivers, most of our local waterways have had flows through them, which has shut them down a bit, however, the Macintyre at Goondi produced a couple of Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies and the upper reaches of the Condamine River have produced a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies.

COASTAL FISHING
Offshore fishing has been pretty good again, with Snapper, Cobia and Trag Jew taken on the 18’s and 24’s, and for anyone who has ventured out further, there has been a few Kingies, Amberjack and Pearl Perch on the 50’s, while inshore, has seen the Seaway fishing well for Jewies at night, Tailor, Trevally and Kingfish early morning, on the run in tide, quality Flathead at Kalinga Bank, Jewies and Tailor inside the Jumpinpin Bar and Squid and Gar are plentiful around the weed banks throughout the Broadwater, while at the Sunny Coast, offshore fishing has seen the northern grounds producing some quality Sweetlip, Caloundra 12 mile has produced some good Snapper and the Barwon Banks and Caloundra Wide have been the places to go for a few Pearl Perch and Cobia. BASS
With near perfect winter conditions last weekend, Cressbrook Dam produced some good quality Bass on spoons, tailspinners and blades, the deeper water in the main basin, across from the boat ramp and the steeper points in the Bull Creek arm have been the best spots to target. A few fish are starting to show up at Somerset Dam; the flats and the timbered area at Kirkleigh have been the spots to target, with live shrimp and soft plastics picking up most of the fish. Ice jigs have been working well in 25 to 35ft of water at Boondooma this week, it’s also worth running mask vibes, blades and soft plastics through these fish, there’s still the odd one taking suspending minnows and live shrimp off the edges as well, at Bjelke Peterson; trolled hard bodies and TN60’s picked up a few fish, however live shrimp fished in the deeper parts or around the timber produced good numbers and at Maroon, the Bass have mainly been around the edges and weed pockets, with soft plastics and small suspending minnows proving to be the most effective.

Cooby Dam is producing a few Yellowbelly on frozen saltwater yabbies, looking in about 40ft of water will give you the best chance. As for the rivers, the Macintyre River has seen good numbers of Yellowbelly falling for bait and spinnerbaits, the Dumeresq River, downstream of Texas has only produced low numbers of Silver and Golden Perch on live shrimp and cray tails, and the Warwick reaches of the Condamine River have produced a few Cod and Yellowbelly on spinnerbaits, hard bodies and frozen saltwater yabbies, while the lower reaches are still a bit dirty.

Inshore fishing has seen the north wall of the Southport Seaway producing Jewies, Tailor and the odd Kingy; and Flathead and Bream have been prominent throughout most of the estuaries. Inshore fishing has produced plenty of Bream off the Boardwalk and around Military Jetty at Caloundra and throughout the Noosa River, Flathead on plastics, blades and live baits in the passage, Noosa River and Maroochy River; Jewies on live baits and heavier soft vibes along the ski run at Noosa, Tailor, Dart and the odd Flathead from the gutters along the northern beaches and Mud crabs have been on the move after the rain, with fresh mullet proving to be the best bait.
