FISHING REPORT – 27-12-2012
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY PERIOD HAS BEEN BUSY
There has been plenty of activity on our waterways
this Christmas, and with the weather over the next week not looking to bad,
apart from a few storms getting about, our dams and waterways are going to
remain fairly busy. I thought I would take this opportunity to go over a few
boating safety rules. If you are going boating over the break, make sure your
PFD’s (Personal Flotation Device) are in good condition and up to the latest Australian
Standards, you must have a PFD for all persons in the boat and all children
under the age of 12 must wear a PFD at all times, while the boat is underway. A
boat is classed as being underway, most of the time, apart from when it is
anchored or nosed onto a bank, in January this year a new rule was introduced
regarding signage for PFD’s, if your PFD’s are not visible, you need to have a
“LIFE JACKET” label fixed near to where your PFD’s are stowed. All persons on
your boat must know where the PFD’s are stowed, and they must also know how to
put the PFD on, as the skipper of the boat, this is your responsibility to
ensure all passengers know these things. Boat ramp rage is another issue that arises at
these busy times of year. There are a few things we can do to avoid these
situations, make sure you have your boat ready for launching before moving onto
the ramp, offer to help, if someone is launching on their own, or even having
difficulty backing the trailer, not everyone can back a trailer as good as we
all like to think we can. There will be a lot of boats, kayaks, canoes and
people on the water, so make sure you stay alert, if everyone does these few
simple things, we should all have a safe and happy Christmas period. With the
weather looking not too bad and a full moon tomorrow night, the fishing should
be good, so good luck to everyone heading out for a fish these holidays and
make sure you send your photos to mullet_gut@bigpond.com or drop them into the
shop, you never know, your photo could end up in the paper.
BASS
Cressbrook Dam
has again produced some decent fish this week, rolling blades through suspended
fish in the deeper water has been effective, while trolling hard bodies through
the same areas has been successful as well, soft plastics have also worked well
at the Cressbrook Creek end of the dam. Boondooma Dam is still
producing good numbers of Bass, trolling spinnerbaits
and hard body lures around the junction, balancing rock and the Boyne River arm,
good quality Bass are being caught casting Mask Vibes and Blades around rocky
edges in the Stuart timbers. Bjelke Petersen dam again produced large numbers of
smaller Bass, with the odd bigger in amongst them, casting small blades and
spinnerbaits around the points and timbered edges throughout the dam has worked
best, live shrimp have been good as well, and at Somerset Dam, most areas from
Pelican Point through to the timber at Kirkleigh are still holding fish, there
have been some big numbers caught over the past week, soft plastics and blades
have worked best, and there’s been plenty of Redclaw in Cressbrook, Somerset,
Boondooma and Bjelke Peterson.
YELLOWBELLY AND
COD.
Boondooma,
live shrimp are working well around
the timber in the Boyne arm, while casting spinnerbaits to the timbered edges
in the Stuart arm has picked up some quality fish as well. Bjelke Peterson is
still producing some quality Yellowbelly, trolling hard bodies in the deeper
water has worked well, while casting spinnerbaits around the timber has also
seen some decent fish caught. Coolmunda is still producing good numbers of
Yellowbelly, with a few smaller Cod in amongst them, trolling the old creek
beds and along the wall has worked well, casting Jackalls in the shallow water
at the bottom end of the dam has also been effective and live crays and frozen
saltwater yabbies have both been successful for the bait anglers. At Leslie
Dam, Yellowbelly have again been out in good numbers, they have been taken on
frozen saltwater yabbies and live shrimp, trolling LittleMax blades in the
shallows and also trolling deep diving lures in the deeper water, out from the
buoy line has worked as well, there has also been quite a few smaller Cod and
stacks of Silver Perch and Jew landed using bait.
